Did you know that the Food and Drug Administration recently warned against the use of so-called "keepsake" ultrasounds, strongly discouraging their use for creating fetal images and videos. The agency noted that ultrasounds can heat tissues slightly and in some cases, produce very small bubbles in the tissue. The long-term effects of tissue heating are not known.

Exercise and Gut Integrity
Surprise! Exercise Helps Our Gut Flora Flourish
Until recently, the relationship between exercise and impact on gut microbiota has not been fully explored.

In a study from last month's Gut, researchers found that the gut microbiota of athletes was far more diverse than non-athlete groups. Athletes had lower inflammatory and improved metabolic markers.

Bonnie: Specifically, protein, which athletes consume a lot of to maintain, repair, and rebuild muscle, positively correlated with microbial diversity.

Steve: You don't have to be an elite athlete to strive for more diverse gut flora. You just need to be consistent with your exercise, pushing the envelope sometimes, and most importantly, enjoy whatever exercise you partake in.

Be Smart About Antibiotics
Protocol to Minimize the Damage
This time of year is when the most antibiotic prescriptions are written. You cannot be cavalier about taking antibiotics because they have long ranging implications on your health. There are several things you must demand from your doctor before considering an antibiotic (your doctor should be addressing these things before prescribing anyway).
  1. Do you have a bacterial infection? The only way to know is to test for it. If you have a virus or fungus, antibiotics are of no assistance to you. Because of antibiotic-resistance, any doctor who gives you one anyway should be cited for malpractice. The doctor is not only heightening your possibility for harboring antibiotic-resistant bacteria, but is putting the public in greater peril.
So you tested positive for a bacterial infection, now what?
  1. Have your physician test your bacterial infection against several antibiotics first to make sure you find the one that will work. Otherwise, you could go through several rounds of antibiotics before you find the one that is effective.
  2. Are you taking any medications that would be deadly when mixed with antibiotics? The list is long and you should always check with you pharmacist to make sure there are no contraindications.
Now that you've found the right antibiotic and you have no issues with your current meds, now what?

The remainder of this protocol is reserved for NCI Well Connect subscribers. We can send you the rest of the protocol if you subscribe here today.

Mid-Week Briefs
PPIs No Benefit to Crying Infants
Bonnie: After millions of unwarranted prescriptions over the last two decades, research now supports our long-held belief that PPIs do nothing to soothe colicky babies. The study also alludes to their inherent risk.

New for Cold & Flu Season
The probiotic strain streptococcus salivarius comes in a lozenge that colonizes the mouth, nose, and nasopharynx, crowding out pathogenic bacteria. It can prevent plaque, cavities, bad breath, ear infections, sore throats, colds, coughs, postnasal drip, and other sinus problems. It also tastes good!

Imaginary Meal?
Researchers have developed an entirely new type of pill that tricks the body into thinking it has consumed calories, thus accelerating metabolism. The compound effectively stopped body mass gain, lowered cholesterol, controlled blood sugar and minimized inflammation in mice, making it an excellent candidate for a rapid transition into human clinical trials.
