FDA Warns of Vitamin Deficiency
Did you know that the Food and Drug Administration just changed the warning labels on a class of gastrointestinal reflux medications called Proton pump inhibitors (including Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix, etc.)?

In addition to causing potentially severe magnesium deficiency, the FDA has now added vitamin B12 deficiency to the label. We have know about this for years, but for the FDA to finally take this step is huge.

Bonnie: If you are on PPIs and not taking magnesium, B-Complex, and a multivitamin/mineral, you need to ASAP. If you would like to get off PPIs, you have options. You can make an appointment with me because I deal with this issue frequently. If you want to work with your doctor, I would first suggest reading the self-help Reverse Reflux Action Plan available at our website (available for free by email request to NCI Well Connect subscribers).

Bicarbonate for Bones
Putting Out the Flames
This isn't the first time you've heard us say that bone loss is an inflammatory disorder. And it certainly will not be the last time, until bone health experts come to the realization that dietary modification is paramount.

Along with dietary measures, a new study in Osteoporosis International found that supplementation of alkaline potassium salts may help preserve bone health by lowering the excretion of calcium and acid as well as bone resorption - the process whereby bone minerals are broken down and released into the blood - therefore increasing their strength.

By significantly reducing the excretion of calcium and acid in urine, excess acid is neutralized and bone mineral is preserved. According to the lead researcher, "excess acid in the body, produced as a result of a typical Western diet, causes bones to weaken and fracture."

Steve: One way to reduce bone inflammation and other inflammatory-related disorders is to intelligently alkalize the body by consuming bicarbonate. However, overdoing it can make your body too alkaline. When your digestive system does not have enough acid, bacteria and other pathogens proliferate which can create frequent illness.

Along with our Acid/Alkaline Food Chart provided below, there are two bicarbonate options we recommend if bone loss is a problem. NCI Well Connect subscribers have access to the rest of this article.

How Much Do You Pay for Bloodwork?
Bloodwork Costly For Some Even With Insurance
Right now, most of us are thinking about scheduling wellness visits with our health professionals. If you see Bonnie, you know that bloodwork is an important part of the visit.

The problem? If you have a high deductible, your out-of-pocket cost can be prohibitive. Even if insurance covers most of the bloodwork, the lab inflates the prices so much that your co-pay is even steep.

The solution? We have used a local lab for over 20 years that does our entire bloodwork panel for a VERY reasonable price.

The benefits? You do not have to go through your physician. While you do pay for the bloodwork out-of-pocket, you can use an FSA or HSA credit card. You can self-submit a claim to insurance for potential reimbursement.

Contact us for details if this is seems like an attractive option for you.

Mid-Week Briefs
Saving Babies' Lives
Bonnie: The B-vitamin folic acid saves the lives of 1,300 babies each year. This success story is extra special to me because as a dietetic intern, I helped the March of Dimes roll out one of the most successful public health campaigns in recent history.

New for Cold & Flu Season
The probiotic strain streptococcus salivarius comes in a lozenge that colonizes the mouth, nose, and nasopharynx, crowding out pathogenic bacteria. It can prevent plaque, cavities, bad breath, ear infections, sore throats, colds, coughs, postnasal drip, and other sinus problems. It also tastes good!

Daily Value Is Misleading
Do you know the main reason for listing "Daily Value" on a food or beverage label is to stave off vitamin or mineral diseases, not to optimize health?
