Health, United States, 2010 (Free)
Released by Centers for Disease Control last week. We summarize the important points of this 600 page document for you:
  • The percentage of Americans of all ages considered in fair or poor health rose from 8.9 in 2000 to 9.9 in 2009.
  • The percentage of Americans of all ages who have heart disease, cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and are obese rose from 2000 to 2009.
  • The percentage of Americans who take prescription drugs rose in all age categories from 39.1 percent in 1988-1994 to 47.2 percent in 2005-2008. Persons 65 and older topped the list with 90.1 percent of that age group taking at least one medication.
  • Personal Health Expenditures doubled from 2000 to 2009 from $1.1 to $2 trillion.
  • Cancer is the leading cause of death for persons ages 45-64 and the second leading cause of death for 25-44 year olds.
  • One-third of adults 20 years of age and over are obese and two-thirds are overweight.
  • In 2007-2008, almost one in five children older than 5 years of age was obese.
  • Joint Pain remained virtually unchanged from 2002-2009.
  • The number of Americans taking antidepressants increased almost fivefold to 11 percent, and anti-anxiety medications from 4 to 6 percent from 1994 to 2008.
  • The percentage of Americans taking statin medication has increased from 2% in 1988-1994 to 25% in 2005-2008. Yet, the number of those with heart disease grew during that same time period.
  • Dietary supplement use has gone down from 52.3 percent of the population in 1999-2002 to 50.9 percent in 2005-2008.
  • The number of Dietitians and Nutritionists increased by 10,000 from 2001-2009.
