Dear Valued Subscriber,

Did you know that the FDA warned last week that Azithromycin, sold as Zithromax and Z-Pak, may cause abnormal changes in the heart's electrical activity? Those changes may lead to a potentially deadly irregular heart rhythm. Patients at risk include those with low blood levels of magnesium or potassium and heart rates that are slower than normal. People who take certain drugs for abnormal heart rhythms are at risk as well. The drug may also cause side effects, such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.

Did you know that the 2013 Superfood Championship is here? The Superfood Committee announced their seedings last night. You can view or print out your bracket here.

Higher Magnesium Equals Lower Diabetes Risk.

Favorable associations between magnesium intake and glycemic traits, such as fasting glucose and insulin, have been documented.

Whether genetic variation affects these associations was largely unknown.

Researchers in the March issue of journalNutrition hypothesized that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with either glycemic traits or magnesium metabolism affect the association between magnesium intake and fasting glucose and insulin.

Consistent with other studies, the researchers confirm that a higher magnesium intake was associated with lower fasting glucose and insulin. Nominal evidence of TRPM6 gene influence and magnesium interaction with select locations suggests that further investigation is warranted.
