Chia Seeds: Hope or Hype?

chia

Chia seeds contain high amounts of the anti-nutrient phytate, which binds to many minerals, such as calcium, iron, zinc, and magnesium, making them less available for absorption. Other nutrients contained in the plant-derived chia seeds, such as vitamin B6, are not as bioavailable to humans as those through animal sources.

The sticky gel surrounding chia seeds further impairs digestion and absorption. Here's why. One way a chia plant survives and multiplies is to have its seeds consumed and deposited elsewhere by a mobile animal, such as a squirrel. The gelatinous substance helps the seed survive the voyage through the squirrel's digestive tract. Hence, the plants survival tactics works against us.

Chia seeds are also high in salicylates (foods or substances containing salicylic acid, such as aspirin). A certain portion of the population has an intolerance to salicylates. If you know or suspect that you are intolerant to salicylates, please do not consume chia seeds.

If tolerated, we prefer that you consume chia seeds only as a better fiber source than, for example, psyllium-based Metamucil. Beyond that, we do not see any inherent value in consuming chia seeds for nutritive value.
