Sugar in Iodized Salt?
--------------------
hainsalt Unfortunately, the answer is yes. Thanks to a client who is an avid label reader, we discovered that iodized salt, even the healthier versions such as Hain Iodized Sea Salt, contains dextrose, a corn sugar. Dextrose is not an anti-caking agent, so why do they add it to sea salt? They say it is to "stabilize" the iodine. We think it is to mask the taste of the iodine.

It is critical that you get sufficient amounts of iodine. So for those of you who are corn-sensitive, what are your options? Read further at link below.

Carolyn's Story.
--------------------
carolynmartinelli Many of us know a family member, friend, or co-worker that has fell victim to medical mismanagement. Our Food Consultant and family member, Carolyn Martinelli, wanted to share her experience with the hope that if she can help at least one person avoid what she did, it would be worth it. She could not share her story until now for legal reasons. And no, this is not an April Fool's joke.

Seen Commercials for Abilify?
--------------------
The makers of Abilify are producing commercials promoting it as something to add to your depression medication when it is not effective. Here are the side effects listed in the commercial . The drug insert reveals even more than what the commercial lists.

So let's recap: on top of the potential side effects associated with the first antidepressant, drug makers want to compounding it with a second med such a Abilify?

This is the trend evidenced by Eli Lilly being given authorization by the FDA to push Symbyax, an antipsychotic (Zyprexa) and antidepressant Prozac) combination for "treatment-resistant" depression.

Basic Steamed Quinoa
Clients often mention the trouble they sometimes have making plain quinoa. Hope this helps.

-1 c. quinoa
-3 c. filtered water or MSG-free chicken or vegetable stock
-1/2 tsp. sea salt

Place the quinoa in a bowl and cover with cold water. Let sit 5 minutes. Drain through a strainer and rinse until the water runs clear. Bring the water or stock to a boil in a medium saucepan. Add the salt and the quinoa. Bring back to a boil, reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer 15 minutes, or until the quinoa is tender and translucent, and each grain displays a little thread. Drain and return to the pan. Cover the pan with a clean dish towel, replace the lid and allow to sit undisturbed for 10 minutes. Fluff and serve. SERVES: 6-8

Note: Cooked quinoa will keep for three or four days in the refrigerator and can be reheated in a microwave or oven.

Dr. Oz Talks Up Infrared Sauna on Oprah.
--------------------
brighton Why should it matter to us that what Oprah says about a product makes it legit? We ask ourselves that question often. For all the times she is right on, there are many times she is way off.

In this case, her doctor guru Dr. Mehmet Oz recently lauded the benefits of far infrared sauna therapy. We agree with this one. We have had one in our Rejuvenating room since 2007.

Bill to Make Organic Farming Illegal.
--------------------
US House and Senate are about to vote on a bill that would outlaw organic farming (Bill HR 875). The Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009 is on the fast-track to be passed within the next two weeks before people realize what is happening.

The main backer and lobbyist is Monsanto - chemical and genetic engineering giant corporation (and Cargill, ADM, and about 35 other related agri-giants). This bill will require organic farms to use specific fertilizers and poisonous insect sprays dictated by a newly formed agency to "make sure there is no danger to the public food supply". This will include backyard gardens that grow food only for a family and not for sales. So First lady Michelle Obama, who recently broke ground for an organic herb and vegetable garden at the White House, would need to use the same fertilizers and insect sprays.

If the bill passes, no heirloom clean seeds will be allowed, just Monsanto genetically altered seeds. It seems Big Agra is a bit afraid of the locavore movement. Please contact your Congressional representatives to make sure this does not happen.

FDA: Stay Away From Pistachios.
--------------------
The FDA and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) are investigating Salmonella contamination in pistachio products sold by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella Inc, Calif. The company has stopped all distribution of processed pistachios and will issue a voluntary recall involving approximately 1 million pounds of its products. Because the pistachios were used as ingredients in a variety of foods, it is likely this recall will impact many products. In addition, the investigation at the company is ongoing and may lead to additional pistachio product recalls.
