Local Hot, Organic Not

locavore2

In a recent study conducted by Mintel, more than half the respondents surveyed (52%) said it's more important to them to buy local produce than organic options. The study also revealed that product launches of fruit products with a natural/organic claim have declined 58% between 2008 and 2011, while new vegetable products decreased 77%. The perception may be that locally sourced food is fresher.

The USDA has also been investing in local food systems. The Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Compass is an interactive map that visually aggregates USDA's work related to these food systems. According to USDA Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan, "Local retail is the biggest food trend we've seen in decades, and USDA is really putting some money on the table to help people build those food systems."

Local could be the ticket to even greater organic growth. The 2011 National Grocers Association survey found that 86 percent of consumers said the availability of local foods in a store greatly influenced where they shopped. With the USDA National Organic Program reporting that certified organic operations increased by nearly 500 from 2010 to 2011, this could offer shoppers the best of both worlds: locally-grown, organic food.

We can only hope this this wonderful trend in local, fresh, organic produce stops being a trend and becomes the norm!
