Vitamin D Update; Reason for Human Success

Vitamin D Update

The treasure trove of research on vitamin D is still coming fast and furious. Since we last posted an update in January, we have tagged 35 studies covering the following: Allergy, Alzheimer's Disease, Back Surgery, Bone Fractures, Cholesterol, Cancer, Diabetes, Fertility, Inflammation, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Leprosy, Menstrual Cramps, Metabolic Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis, Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Pain, Pregnancy, Stress Fractures, Sun Exposure, Where We Live, and more.

Summaries of these studies are accessible at this link with a NCI Well Connect subscription.

In conclusion, if you do not supplement with vitamin D, or at minimum, make sure your D3 level is within range, you are doing yourself a tremendous disservice.

Reason for Success of Humankind?

Carnivory is behind the evolutionary success of humankind, according to a new study in PLoS One. When early humans started to eat meat and eventually hunt, their new, higher-quality diet meant that women could wean their children earlier. Women could then give birth to more children during their reproductive life, which is a possible contribution to the population gradually spreading over the world. The connection between eating meat and a faster weaning process is shown by a research group, which compared close to 70 mammalian species and found clear patterns that learning to hunt was a decisive step in human evolution.

Hunting necessitated communication, planning and the use of tools, all of which demanded a larger brain. At the same time, adding meat to the diet made it possible to develop this larger brain. Carnivores, due to their high quality diet, can wean earlier than herbivores and omnivores. The data showed that humans do not differ from other carnivores with respect to timing of weaning. The difference between us and the great apes, according to the researchers, seems to depend merely on the fact that as a species we are carnivores at our core, whereas gorillas, orangutans and chimpanzees are herbivores or omnivores.
