Celebrating 30 Years of
Bringing the Wellness of Tomorrow, Today
April 6, 2015
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW
that Naltrexone, a medication approved for heroin withdrawal, can be used for Crohn's disease? In a study done with 4.5 mg (very low dose), taken at bedtime for twelve weeks, 89% responded and improved and 67% went into remission!

Have a happy, healthy day. Steve and Bonnie

Why Do I Shop At the Co-Op?

Right Now Is Not a Good Time to Be a Registered Dietitian
Bonnie: While I was out of town, a firestorm of sorts erupted because the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), the organization of registered dietitians, made a titanic blunder in putting their "Kids Eat Right" seal on Kraft American Cheese Singles.

Why would a group, who's sole purpose is to teach Americans to improve their eating habits, choose Kraft Singles as the first product to bless with their "Kids Eat Right" seal? It is surely not because Kraft American Singles are healthy. They are barely real food (no offense to the clients and readers who work at Kraft just down the road from my office). By the FDA's standards, Kraft isn't permitted to refer to Singles as "cheese" because this word indicates that a product is made with at least 51 percent real cheese. This is why the label reads "pasteurized prepared cheese product". I surmise that it is because Kraft donates a lot of money to AND.

You should not be surprised by this action taken by AND. The Associated Press reported recently that some registered dietitians are promoting small cans of Coca-Cola as a snack. Of course, Coco-Cola is another big sponsor for AND. This payola scheme goes way back and is one of the main reasons I never joined the organization. In addition, the AND has been trying to create a monopoly in every state, allowing only registered dietitians to practice. I have helped fight this vehemently in Illinois and we have so far succeeded in fighting this initiative.

It is nice to know that not all RDs are in lock step with the AND decision makers. There has been such a backlash by its membership that the New York Times just announced that the AND is negotiating an end to the labeling deal with Kraft.

Hurry out to your grocery store and get your Kraft American Cheese Singles with the "Kids Eat Right" seal. It will be a collectors item! At worst, it will be a reminder of the hypocrisy that exists within the AND. At best, you can keep the product on your counter and wait to see if it ever gets moldy.

Far Infrared Sauna Therapy
Even though many of us have come out of the deep freeze, it is always the right time to experience Far Infrared Sauna Therapy.

Aside from the fact that you are taking one hour out of your busy lives to relax, Far Infrared Therapy offers numerous therapeutic benefits, most importantly enhanced detoxification. Many clients use it to relieve painful joints, rev up metabolism, and remove buildup of heavy metals.

A recent study in JAMA Internal Medicine found that increased frequency of sauna bathing reduced the risk of sudden cardiac death, coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, and all-cause mortality.
