We hope you had a nice holiday weekend.

Have a happy, healthy week. Bonnie and Steve.

Soda, Diet Soda Sweeten Stroke Risk

soda

A study in the May issue of American Journal of Nutrition does not present a pretty picture for the connection between sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened soda and stroke risk. Researchers followed huge groups of women and men for 28 and 22 years respectively. Not surprisingly, higher soda and diet soda consumption were found to increase stroke risk. What we found surprising is that researchers gauged stroke risk when soda and diet soda were replaced with other drinks.

Compared with 1 serving of sugar-sweetened or low-calorie (diet) soda per day, 1 serving of the following in its place exhibited lower stroke risk.

  • Decaffeinated coffee instead of soda - 10% lower risk
  • Caffeinated coffee instead of soda - 9% lower risk
  • Decaffeinated coffee instead of diet soda - 13% lower risk
  • Caffeinated coffee instead of diet soda - 11% lower risk
  • Skim milk instead of diet soda - 11% lower risk
  • Tea and orange juice were associated with a trend toward reduced risk in both sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened.

Bonnie: Yet more fodder to help your family, friends, and coworkers eliminate soda from their diets.
