Kombucha Kraze: 
What You Don't Know May Harm You.

We are frequently asked about the fermented drink Kombucha. Doesn't this lovely image sum it up?

 

Kombucha starts out as a sugary tea, which is then fermented with the help of a Scoby. Scoby is actually an acronym for symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast. It is a disgusting looking fermentation mat.

 

The best intentions to create a culture for beneficial yeast and bacteria can vary widely. Simply, whatever yeast and bacteria dominate a specific geography and climate can force their way onto the Scoby through the air and whatever working surface one is using to make the Kombucha. 

 

Antibiotic-producing bacteria like penicillin have been found on Kombucha mats. Even worse, toxic bacteria like anthrax have been detected by scientists. Yeast strains such as Candida Albicans and mold strains such as Aspergillus have been detected in Kombucha cultures.

 

Other ingredients in Kombucha that may be undesirable are alcohol (this was the reason for its extended recall a few years back), caffeine, vinegar, lactic acid, and sugar.

 

Unfortunately, there are no studies that we can draw upon to help you with your decision making about Kombucha. What we can tell you is that many clients have reported horrible reactions after drinking it. Some reactions were immediate and some appeared gradually.

 

For the reasons listed above, we do not recommend Kombucha. The potential for contamination and the impetus for yeast overgrowth and allergic reaction override the minimal, if any, benefits to drinking it.

 

The Happiness Index:
You Can Measure Your Well-Being.
Mental health professionals use numerous techniques to measure one's happiness. Based upon the most recent findings in the April issue of journal Health Quality Life Outcomes, the Pemberton Happiness Index (PHI) may be the most effective because it integrates parts from all other existing indices.
 
The scale includes eleven items related to different domains of remembered well-being and ten items related to experienced well-being.
 
Perceived well-being is of great importance for most human beings. Although there is cultural variation in the relevance assigned to happiness, a positive evaluation of one's own life in conjunction with a state of positive emotions is universally valued as a significant component of a good life. 
 
Given the centrality of well-being in people's lives, the assessment of well-being is essential for both experimental research and applied purposes. Here is an outline of the PHI performed by mental health professionals.

 

Integrative well-being

  • Remembered well-being. General well-being. global satisfaction with life and one item of vitality.
  • Eudaimonic well-being. Life meaning, self-acceptance, personal growth, relatedness, perceived control, and autonomy.
  • Hedonic well-being. Frequency of positive and negative affect in daily life.
  • Social well-being. The global feeling of living in a society that promotes optimal psychological functioning.

Experienced well-being

  • Includes a list of 16 items related to specific experiences, with eight common positive events (e.g., "I hugged someone") and eight negative ones (e.g., "I had an argument with someone") that can be experienced by virtually anyone on a given day in different cultures.
