Warning: Runners & Green Tea Drinkers.

Runners
Another young runner (26 years of age) dropped dead at a half marathon in Chicago two weeks ago. As with so many other similar stories recently, the autopsy was inconclusive.

I am pleading with you to notify friends, family, and coworkers that they must pay strict attention to nutrition if they are training for arduous athletic activities such as a marathon.

While most of us are familiar with the importance of electrolytes, the nutrient most important for cardiac health is magnesium. A sports drink is not going to come close to replenishing what is depleted during training and a normal work day. I have said for years that severe magnesium deficiency could be one of the main reasons for all these mysterious deaths because most coroners do not look for magnesium deficiency.

It is simply heartbreaking to continually read about these tragic stories that can be ameliorated with a proper nutritional approach.

Green Tea Drinkers

The Japanese government has banned exports of green tea from four agricultural regions of Japan after leaves there tested positive for high levels of radioactive cesium. The chances are very high that there will be a shortage of Japanese green tea within the next few months once manufacturers supplies are drawn down, or at the very least, prices are set to skyrocket.

This is what we suggest until the issue is resolved:

  • Temporarily, choose Indian black teas, such as Assam or Darjeeling, Ceylon from Sri Lanka, and Kenyan black or green tea. While the Chinese produce the most green tea in the world, we have always been reluctant to recommend it because the quality control is so poor. However, Chinese Oolong tea should be fine.
  • If you are taking green tea as a supplement for a therapeutic reason, continuing this should not be an problem. Most quality manufacturers will test every raw material batch and will not accept radioactive green tea.
  • If in doubt, ask the retailer or manufacturer from where and when they received their raw material to assure that if it came from Japan, it was harvested before the tsunami.
