Did you know that 
a new double blind study suggests that Coenzyme Q10 may benefit patients with fibromyalgia. In an Antioxidants and Redox Signaling study, patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia were given 300 mg of CoQ10 or placebo per day for 40 days. Those in the CoQ10 group saw a 52% decrease in pain compared to a 21.3% in the placebo group; 47% decrease in fatigue compared to a 14.5% decrease in the placebo group; 44% decrease in morning tiredness compared to a 3.9% increase in the placebo group.


Perhaps just as important was the revelation of CoQ10's effect on the activity of an enzyme called AMPK. AMPK is the master regulator of cell energy levels and it is activated when the energy currency of the cell, called ATP, is low. AMPK increases the use of both sugar and fat-burning in the cell to increase ATP levels and improve activity of the energy-making component of the cell, the mitochondria.

How Much Financial Responsibility Should We Take for Our Health?
Steve: This is an interesting look at how one country with socialized medical care is feeling about taking personal responsibility for staying healthy. As the US embarks on a new healthcare era, this is an issue sure to arise early and often. 
 
Free and equal access to medical treatment has been a staple of the Danish welfare state, but more and more Danes express the view that people treated for lifestyle diseases like smoker's lungs or obesity should pay for their own treatment -- as these patients are thought to be responsible for their own medical conditions.

Almost 50 percent of Danes believe that obese people should pay for their own obesity operations if they are shown to be responsible for their conditions. These ideas are gaining ground as Scandinavian welfare states struggle in the wake of the financial crisis and scientists learn more and more about the causes of lifestyle diseases.

The main argument of why they should be held responsible for their own health is the belief that we are the causes of our own actions and that our behavior is not triggered by external factors. But how can one legitimize that there are no previous causes? For instance, we know that cigarette companies romanticized smoking in ads to young children as well as withheld research on cigarettes' deadly and addictive nature for decades. Is this not an external factor?

Should a young woman who has a genetic makeup that predisposes her to sugar addiction be culpable for a diabetic condition that was created in an environment where sugar is available in limitless quantities? However, if she gets gastric bypass surgery to lose body mass and put diabetes in remission, but regains the weight and the diabetes returns because of poor lifestyle choices, should she then be culpable?

In addition, social inequality within health has shown that lower social groups have a higher probability of contracting a number of diseases, simply because their access to healthy food and proper healthcare is limited. This has to be taken into account.
 
Of course there is some level of personal responsibility, especially if we are armed with the knowledge of what can keep us healthy at an early age and decide not to follow through. In addition, with the knowledge that we have about smoking, those who still choose to smoke should be fully culpable for their habit.
 
This debate will reach a tipping point, and whatever comes of it, I hope it will lead to a healthier population.
