NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
June 3, 2015
FREE PREVIEW
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW the use of silver for medicinal purposes dates back to the eighth century century and is still in use today? Generalized argyria is characterized by slate-gray to blue discoloration of the skin caused by cutaneous deposits of silver particles after long-term ingestion of solutions containing colloidal silver ingredients or silver salts. The skin discoloration is more prominent in sun-exposed areas and is usually permanent, according to a study in JAMA Dermatology. It is a heavy metal, so we do not recommend it ever.

Test Best to Assess Heart Risk
Bonnie: HDL is the 'good cholesterol' that helps remove fat from artery walls, reversing the process that leads to heart disease. A large, 20 year study in Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinologyhas shown that HDL function may be a better measure of coronary heart disease risk and a better target for heart-protecting drugs.

The scientists found that people with no heart disease whose blood had the highest measures of HDL function at the outset of the study had 36% less heart attacks and other heart disease events in the years that followed, compared to those with the lowest HDL function.

If you have normal triglycerides, good HDL, and normal C-reactive protein, a high LDL level is a non-issue, unless the LDL particle size is small and dense. The only way to find this out is to have your doctor run LDL particle size in addition to a regular lipid panel.

Testosterone Levels in Men

Low levels of vitamin D are significantly associated with low levels of testosterone in healthy middle-aged men, according to a study presented at the American Urological Association 2015 Annual Meeting.

Levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D were insufficient in 68% of the men. And only about 11% of participants with insufficient levels took vitamin D supplements. Total testosterone was higher in men with normal levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D than in men with lower levels.

The researchers suggest that there is something about testosterone synthesis that needs vitamin D. In another study of healthy overweight men with a low baseline level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and testosterone levels, there was a significant increase in total testosterone levels after 12 months of a vitamin D3 3000 IU supplement daily.

Steve: Get your vitamin D3 level checked before supplementing with vitamin D3 to ascertain the best dose for your individual needs. We always suggest maintaining a level at 50 or above.
