Magnesium Now Being Used in Psychiatry.

We recently attended a seminar to learn from Integrative Psychiatrist James Greenblatt, MD. He relayed fascinating information which further solidified our belief that magnesium is one, if not the most, important supplemental nutrients available today. Here are some highlights from the seminar:

  • Magnesium is his most useful tool at his practice.
  • Dosage, bioavailability, and evidence-based formulations are extremely important for results.
  • Fertilizers and crop processing considerably reduces our access to dietary magnesium.
  • Average intake of magnesium in 1900: 500 mg. per day. Now two-thirds of the population do not get the recommended 420 for men; 320 for women.
  • Magnesium positively influences brain neurotransmitters.
  • Stress is most common reason for magnesium deficiency. When cortisol (the stress hormone) levels go up, magnesium levels go down.
  • Magnesium regulates the pituitary and adrenal glands, which both regulate stress.
  • If it spasms, it is probably magnesium deficiency.
  • Vitamin D3 activates increased absorption of magnesium.
  • Glycinate is his favorite magnesium source.
  • Magnesium maintains potassium balance.
  • Vitamin B-6/Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate supports magnesium retention.
  • It can take months to right a magnesium deficiency: g.i. problems in a few weeks; chronic stress or trauma takes months
  • Dr. Greenblatt recommends taking magnesium for the long-term.
  • Harvard and Massachusetts General hospitals are now recommending magnesium to their psychiatric patients.
  • Stimulant medication and high caffeine takers (children or adults) saps magnesium.
