NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
August 12, 2015
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that "for artificially sweetened beverages and fruit juice, our findings inform little benefit of using them as an alternative to sugar sweetened beverages." That is a direct quote from authors of a new study in BMJ. Moreover, they discovered that "artificially sweetened beverages and fruit juice also showed positive associations with incidence of type 2 diabetes."

Just another reason to stick with water, unsweetened tea, and coffee!

OFF TO COLLEGE? Don't leave without supplement nutrients for immune support, stress-reduction, metabolism, and focus.

Women Don't Need Vitamin D Supplements. Really?
Steve: According to media headlines from a study published last week in JAMA Internal Medicine, "women don't need vitamin D supplements".

Of course, we know better. This recent study found little evidence that vitamin D supplements increased bone density or bone strength in postmenopausal women. There were so many confounding variables in the study's structure and design that I do not want to bore you with the details.

I'm glad this study picked up traction in the media. I can now bring you up to speed on latest, high quality vitamin D research that has been published since February. Not only do women need supplements, but so do men, as well as people of all groups!

A study from the July issue of Clinical Endocrinology  showed that severe vitamin D deficiency was associated with the future risk of mild cognitive impairment, as well as dementia in adults.

Also, in a July study from PLoS One, in children, each 10 point increase in vitamin D level showed a positive reduction in LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglycerides.

Dermatologists may not want to read this, but in last month's Journal of the American College of Nutrition, researchers found that UV exposure not only provides the benefits of vitamin D production, but also many additional health benefits not related to vitamin D, including those related to the release of nitric oxide, production of beta-endorphin, and regulation of circadian rhythms -- all important components of life-long health and well-being. They concluded that the current culture of sun avoidance in the United States carries with it both health risks and quantifiable harm.

The rest of this Vitamin D Update is for NCI Well Connect Members.

Twinlab Allergy Multicaps Discontinued
TwinlabAllergyMultiCaps
We have been informed that Allergy Multicaps has been discontinued. This was not a total shock as Allergy Fighters followed a similar path recently.

Luckily, the numerous clients who have already switched to Klaire Vita Spectrum have been very happy with it. As we have said to many of you, we like the Klaire multi even better from a purity and hypoallergenic standpoint.

Going forward, Klaire Vita Spectrum will be our long-term replacement. One minor note: if you do not take extra supplemental calcium and magnesium, we encourage you to take extra because Vita Spectrum does not contain adequate daily value. If you had taken two Allergy Multicaps, take 250 mg. of extra calcium and 200 mg. magnesium. If you had taken three Allergy Multicaps, take 500 mg. of extra calcium and 400 mg. magnesium.

If you would like us to take a look at your file to make individual recommendations, do not hesitate to contact us.
