Back to School Special Issue
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW the chance of an obese person attaining normal body weight is 1 in 210 for men and 1 in 124 for women, increasing to 1 in 1,290 for men and 1 in 677 for women with severe obesity, according to a study in the American Journal of Public Health? These numbers are staggering and if further research corroborates, public health experts need to take a hard, long look in the mirror.

Clients who have lost tremendous amounts of body mass have said it is by far the toughest thing they've ever had to do. To avoid this journey, prevention is key to reducing the numbers of those who are obese. Steps have been taken, but we are far from being a society that allows for the type of prevention required to solve the epidemic.

If already obese, instead of focusing exclusively on body mass reduction, optimizing lifestyles to individual need, in order to build health, must come first. This way, even if you never get back to your ideal weight, you will still be as healthy as you can be.

Have a happy, healthy day. Steve and Bonnie

B-Vites Boost Bones' Bounce
Bonnie: Elevated serum total homocysteine (tHcy) is a risk factor for bone fracture and osteoporosis. Nutritional causes of elevated homocysteine are suboptimal B-vitamin status.

The first nationally representative report on the relation of B-vitamins and bone health was published last week in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Researchers examined the relation between B-vitamin status biomarkers and bone mineral density (BMD), risk of osteoporosis, and biomarkers of bone turnover in women over fifty years of age. If they only used DEXA scan, we would not have mentioned this study (because we do not accept the DEXA one-size-fits-all strategy). However, other B-vitamin biomarkers relative to bone turnover were measured, including bone alkaline phosphatase and urinary N-terminal cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen.

In comparison with optimal concentrations, women with elevated homocysteine had lower serum vitamin B-12, red blood cell folate, and dietary B-vitamin intakes, had significantly higher mean markers of bone turnover, and double the risk of lumbar osteoporosis.

For those of you worried about your bones, an easy thing to do is to rule out high homocysteine with a blood test and make sure you are getting B-vitamins!

TWINLAB DAILY ONE CAPS NO IRON
Due to a raw material shortage that has created a production backlog, Twinlab announced they will not be available until mid-August. Many of you are on the backorder list. Contact us by phone or email if you want to be added to the list.

We spent an inordinate amount of time finding the ideal replacements if interested:

  2. Twinlab Daily One Caps Without Iron: replace with Pure Encaps Multi t/d (one capsule Multi t/d equals one capsule Daily One)

We apologize for the inconvenience. We certainly understand this is a frustrating situation. We will be carrying these replacements long-term if you do not wish to go back to Twinlab when it comes back in stock.
