Why We Need Stomach Acid
Steve: You'd think the answer would be simple right: to break down our food. This is a reason, but not the main reason.

Analysis of data on stomach acidity and diet in birds and mammals suggests that high levels of stomach acidity developed to defend animals against food poisoning.

The PLOS study further explained that species that eat food at high risk of microbial contamination have more acidic stomachs. This acidity allows the stomach to act as a filter, effectively controlling which microbes can pass through the stomach to the gut.

The most important point made in this study, which we have said forever, is that medical treatments -- from surgery to antacids -- can significantly alter the acidity in a human stomach. They leave us more susceptible to infection.

Whenever we "block" something, such as the way antacids and reflux medication block stomach acid, you change the entire makeup of, in this case, your microbial ecosystem. Pathogenic bacteria have free reign to wreak havoc on our guts.

We hope that public health experts will take this study seriously and begin to curb the use of acid blockers, much like they are doing now with antibiotics.
