DID YOU KNOW that according to a study from the August issue of Journal of Medical Case Reports, the supplementation of fish oil containing omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, benefitted patients with breast cancer by increasing their antioxidant levels? The results strongly suggest that fish oil's possible role as an adjuvant in the management of breast cancer.
 
Alcohol: Friend or Foe?
Steve: There is probably no more vexing foodstuff than alcohol. One week, it is a miracle. The next week, it is a pariah. So what are we to make out of the mixed messages?

For example, our PaleoMediterranean eating style includes 7 glasses of wine per week for optimal health. The phytochemical resveratrol, in red wine especially, trumps any potential negatives.

Another example are the benefits of beer for inflammation. Yes, this data does exist. The hops is what has an antiinflammatory effect. However, the yeast and grain in beer far outweighs the benefits. Hops extract, which can be taken as a supplement, is a much better option for an antiinflammatory benefit.

For many of you, because of allergies and intolerances, hard alcohol such as grape or potato-derived vodka, tequila, or gin are your only options. Unfortunately, the long-term prospects for hard alcohol are not looking so good.

A quote from a major study in last week's The Lancet"Drinking alcohol does not result in a net health benefit and, in fact, increases the risk for alcohol-related cancers by 51%, according to a study of almost 115,000 people from 12 countries."

The researchers admit that "the association between alcohol consumption and health is extremely complex. Although alcohol consumption has been associated with some health benefits, it has also been associated with increased risks for other outcomes."

Looking at the details of the study, it has just as many mixed messages as prior research:
  • The risk for cardiovascular disease was lower in wine drinkers (up to seven drinks per week) than in never drinkers, and the risk for heart attack was significantly lower. However, the risk for cancer was 38% higher in wine drinkers than in never drinkers, 69% higher in spirit drinkers, and 20% higher in beer drinkers.
     
  • There was no reduction in the risk for death or stroke among current drinkers.
     
  • Heavy drinking (14 or more drinks in women per week; 21 or more in men) had a 31% increased risk for death. Those with heavy episodic drinking (five or more drinks in one sitting at least once per month) had a 54% increased risk for mortality and a 71% increased risk for injury.
Takeaways
  • If you do not drink, don't start. There are other things you can do to make up for red wine's heart preventive properties.
  • Unless you consume MORE than 7 drinks per week, you need not worry. Moderation is the key.
  • If you drink moderately, you will receive a net zero benefit from wine, and a slightly negative result from beer or hard liquor.
  • If you have cancer in your family history, your decision to drink alcohol is a bit tougher, as this is not the only study that has linked it with higher incidence of cancer.
Let's put things into perspective. Besides water, alcohol is the oldest human-consumed beverage. It is not going anywhere anytime soon.
