New Therapy for Autoimmune Disorders?

Scientists have made an important breakthrough in the fight against debilitating autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis by revealing how to stop cells attacking healthy body tissue.

 

Rather than the body's immune system destroying its own tissue by mistake, researchers in a Nature Communications study have discovered how cells convert from being aggressive to actually protecting against disease.

 

This could lead to treatment for many autoimmune disorders, including multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, Graves' disease and systemic lupus.

 

Scientists were able to selectively target the cells that cause autoimmune disease by dampening down their aggression against the body's own tissues while converting them into cells capable of protecting against disease. This type of conversion has been previously applied to allergies, known as 'allergic desensitization', but its application to autoimmune diseases has only been appreciated recently.

 

Steve: Simply, administrating fragments of the proteins that are normally the target for attack leads to correction of the autoimmune response when they are injected at gradually increased doses. This forces changes in gene expression that leads to conversion of aggressor into protector cells.

 

What an incredibly exciting discovery!

 

Magnesium Helps Metabolic Health
As much as 23.5% of the American population maintain a normal weight but have significant blood irregularities such as insulin resistance, high blood sugar, high triglycerides, and high blood pressure. A new study in Archives of Medical Researchshows magnesium helps.

Subjects with the aforementioned metabolic abnormalities and low magnesium blood levels but who were normal weight received 382 mg of magnesium or placebo per day. Blood pressure and blood samples were taken before and after the study. The researchers observed the following changes in the magnesium group after four months:
  • Magnesium blood levels increased 35%
  • Fasting Glucose dropped 15%
  • Systolic blood pressure dropped 1.80%
  • Diastolic blood pressure dropped 3.80%
  • Fasting Insulin dropped 14.80%
  • HOMA-Insulin Resistance index dropped 48.50%
  • Triglycerides dropped 48.50%

Levels in the placebo group were either unchanged, increased, or in the case of fasting glucose, triglycerides, and HOMA, dropped a smidgen but the researchers considered it insignificant.

PPIs and the Elderly Don't Mix 

Elderly patients taking proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) were at a 43% increased risk of being hospitalized with hypomagnesemia, according to a new study in PLoS Medicine. Patients receiving both a PPI and a diuretic had a 73% increased risk for hospitalization.

 

Bonnie: I still fight with my clients doctors about this issue. They write it off as insignificant, even though the FDA has sent out multiple warnings about micronutrient depletion of not just magnesium, but B-vitamins as well.

Kettle Versus Regular Potato Chips

The difference is the cooking process. Whereas your basic bagged chip is fried in a conveyer-belt-like continuous process, kettle chips have a pre-industrial pedigree. They're made in batches -- dunk a bunch, take them out, dunk a bunch more. When a new batch of potatoes is added, it lowers the temperature of the oil, which means the chips take longer to cook, which results in their irregular shape, darkened parts and thicker texture.

 

But that's about where the differences end. They have nearly identical ingredient lists, and the same amount of fat, calories and carbohydrates. Once in your body, they'll be broken down into sugar, set off a surge of insulin and cause excess sugar to be stored as fat.

 

One could argue that kettle chips have a slight edge on account of the lower temperature of the oil, as the high temperature of conventional methods oxidizes the cooking oil, but that's a pretty insignificant bonus.

 

Steve: As I have mentioned before, if you eat potato chips, Trader Joes Olive Oil Potato Chips at least boast more potassium than sodium.

Is Second-Hand E-Cigarette Smoke Okay?

Here's what we've learned so far:

  • Propylene glycol, one of the most commonly used constituents of e-liquids, showed it can cause eye and lung irritation. In its product safety assessment for propylene glycol, the Dow Chemical Company recommends individuals avoid inhaling the chemical.
  • Potentially toxic carbonyls can form when e-liquids are heated to high temperatures. The carbonyls include formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, and butanol. Propylene glycol-based e-liquids generated levels of carcinogenic formaldehyde observed in the range seen in tobacco smoke.
  • Inhalation of flavorings and preservatives used in e-liquids have the potential for cytotoxic effects. Stem cells were sensitive to the chemicals.
  • Ultrafine particles of water, nicotine, and solvent appeared to deposit in the lungs in a similar pattern as the ultrafines found in tobacco smoke.
  • Even more concerning was the discovery of high concentrations of heavy metal and silicate nanoparticles in the vapor. This came from the heating element, which consisted of a nickel-chromium wire coated in silver and soldered with tin.
  • Users most frequently complain of headache, respiratory tract irritation, and changes in appetite.
  • Calls to U.S. Poison Control Centers related to child exposure to e-cigarettes increased from 1 call in September 2010 to 215 in February 2014. 

Steve: Of course, none of this takes into account the most concerning symptom, acute nicotine toxicity, which can include agitation, rapid heartbeat, seizures, nausea, and vomiting. 

 

E-cigarettes do pollute the air and people, just not as much as conventional cigarettes.

I am not easily impressed by restaurants. However, I was floored when I recently went to brunch at Prairie Grass Cafe in Northbrook.

 

As you know, kids menus are usually the dregs of the earth. While some restaurants have attempted to improve over the years, Prairie Grass has delivered by partnering with Healthy Fare for Kids. This pilot program is leading the change in Chicagoland restaurants and is hoping to catch on throughout Illinois and the nation.

 

How many kids menus boast Edamame, a combo plate of sliced apples, carrots, chunks of cheese, and cucumbers, and filet of whitefish sauteed with a chef's choice of vegetables?

Tech for Wellness 
One Less Trip to the Doc? 

Technology has added plenty of new annoyances to life, but it's also done away with countless others. One more that could be on its way out? A visit to the doctor's office. That's the vision of a company called Cue, which wants to make at-home medical diagnosis - everything from the flu to vitamin D levels - as common as pregnancy tests.

 

The concept revolves around a small cubic kit, which the company says can use a swab of saliva, nasal fluid, or blood, to discern what's going on in your body. And the product won't just determine if you're sick: it'll also check vitamin or testosterone levels, or help women figure out if it's a good time to try for a baby. In short, Cue is designed to replace the trips you'd take to a doctor or lab by doing some of those same tests at home.

 

The flu is one of five things Cue plans to assess in its initial model, alongside fertility, testosterone, inflammation, and vitamin D levels.

 

Cue hopes to ship its first $199 device to a group of beta testers early next year.

Our Water Needs to Be Cleaner 

Wastewater treatment plants are not able to remove substances such as drugs, found in the wastewater of medical centers, or halogenated compounds and cyanides from industrial wastewater. This is why antibiotics and hormonally active substances such as bisphenol A from plastics manufacturing have already accumulated in the environment and can be traced in ground water and even in some samples of drinking water. Such persistent pollutants require a special purifying treatment to remove them from wastewater.

 

Tests have shown that using hydrogen peroxide or ozone as the agents are especially effective. They oxidize pollutants into smaller, more degradable organic molecules or mineralize them completely to carbon dioxide.

 

Steve: These new methods need to be implemented universally in wastewater treatment plants around the globe. The problem is either the treatment plants are antiquated and cannot retrofit to accommodate the new techniques, or they do not have funding.

Caffeine and the Risk Kidney Stones 

A recent study in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that in over 200,000 subjects, those with the highest intake of caffeine had a 29% lower risk in developing kidney stones.

 

Intake of caffeine was also associated with higher urine volume, calcium, and potassium and with lower urine oxalate and supersaturation for calcium oxalate and uric acid.

 

Bonnie: Certainly, as this study shows, kidney stones from excess calcium excretion via coffee and caffeinated beverage consumption are not the issue. Kidney stones are a multifactorial issue that requires detailed analysis and consultation.
