Dear Valued Subscriber,

Did you know that despite decades of effort, researchers in a JAMA Internal Medicine study found only incremental improvement in antibiotic prescribing for adults making a visit with sore throat. The antibiotic prescribing rate dropped from roughly 80% to 70% around 1993 and dropped again around 2000 to 60%, where it has remained stable. This still far exceeds the 10% prevalence of strep throat among adults seeking care for sore throat.

Strep is the only form of sore throat that requires antibiotics. Be your own advocate and shun antibiotics unless you have a confirmed bacterial infection that you cannot fight off by other means.

Have a happy, healthy week. Bonnie and Steve Minsky

Health News Reporting Rarely Tells the Whole Story.
announce

Previous research has shown that the most popular way Americans get their health news is by watching local television broadcasts. Now, researchers at the University of Missouri School of Journalism have found that while local television news is the most common source of health news for Americans, most health news stories on local news broadcasts are only 30 seconds or less in length. This trend leads to misunderstanding of important but complicated health news stories.

Because of the complex and rather technical nature of many health news stories, stories that are too short can leave viewers confused and inappropriately alarmed or complacent.

Steve: We get inquiries on a weekly basis from clients who are concerned because of a health story they heard on the news. Usually, it only takes one sentence for these stories to take on a life of their own. We spend a lot of time dispelling myths created by the misinformation portrayed in these health news stories. It is one of the reasons why we started our eNewsletter and blog. It gives us a forum to explain, in detail, the truths and untruths of major health topics.

A Healthier Halloween

Shopping for Halloween treats? Consider purchasing an edible and non-edible treat. A study we always refer to, from Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, states that when given the option, children between the ages of 3 and 14 choose toys over candy during trick or treating.

Along with offering non-edible treats, make sure the edible treat is as healthy as possible. A dark chocolate square, such as the Endangered Species brand, is actually considered healthful.

A few tips for your own children:

  • Give them a snack before trick or treating to avoid cravings.
  • Give them your own treats to eat at school or after-school parties.
  • Offer them five or ten cents for every piece of candy they collect as an alternative to eating all of it!
