Is Universal D Supplementation Coming?
Universal supplementation with vitamin D to reduce the risk for multiple sclerosis (MS) was the subject of debate at 29th Congress of the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis.

A number of researchers admitted that vitamin D is without a doubt one of the environmental factors that plays an important role in the pathophysiology of MS.
 
When looking at the risks, costs, and benefit equation, the risks seem tiny. The cost of vitamin D is dirt cheap, but the costs of MS are staggering and are increasing.
 
Humans derive most of their vitamin D from the action of sunlight in their skin. However, in view of the current Western lifestyle with most daily activities taking place indoors, sun exposure is often not sufficient for adequate vitamin D production. Optimal dietary intake through food and supplementation therefore is paramount.

Some of the researchers went so far as to suggest that mass supplementation is probably a better strategy than screening for low levels or trying to educate the public to increase their intake.
 
Bonnie: There is precedence for mass supplementation. A rickets epidemic was eradicated by the late 1930's after introducing cod liver oil to children on a massive scale in the U.S. It was then decided to fortify milk and other dairy products with vitamin D. While dairy fortification may have staved off rickets, it certainly did not prevent mass deficiency, which has lead to myriad maladies, including autoimmune disorders such as MS.
 
Don't wait for mass supplementation to happen. Get your vitamin D3 level tested at least every 1-2 years to make sure it is in the optimal range.
 
Unwanted Holiday Pounds.
The holiday season (which includes Halloween) means dealing with family members and social situations that can be uncomfortable and stressful. If you use food as a crutch, this time of year could be troublesome.
 
Getting to the root of your problems and finding better ways to deal with them without food will help you avoid putting on extra unwanted pounds this holiday season. Many of us make bad decisions about food under stress because we want a distraction from what is challenging us. Of course, we know eating is not the answer.
 
Many of us will gain anywhere from seven to 10 pounds from the middle of October through the end of the year because of all the fatty and sugary foods available at parties and other gatherings. There are ways to cope without resorting to food. Here a few great examples of things you can do instead of making a poor dietary choice:
  • Take a 15 minute walk.
  • Meditate for five minutes.
  • 10x5 Cycle. Perform the following exercises in order: 10 jumping jacks; 10 push-ups; 10 crunches; 10 lunges; 10 seconds running in place 
  • Drink an eight ounce glass of water.

If need be, call a friend or join a support group where you can talk about and discover positive ways to fix cravings without eating. It's important to interrupt patterns that send you to the pantry or the buffet table.
