NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
November 8, 2017
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that children who slept on average one hour less a night had higher risk factors for type 2 diabetes, including higher levels of blood glucose and insulin resistance, according to the August issue of Pediatrics? The study also confirmed the association with higher levels of body fat.

The recommended sleep duration for a 10 year old is 10 hours and so a child getting just one hour less has a higher risk.

Inflammation: Nip it in the Bud
Bonnie and Steve: A new study in Neurology  provides more evidence that midlife systemic inflammation may contribute to brain volume loss and cognitive trouble later in life.

A higher level of systemic inflammatory markers measured in middle-aged men and women was independently associated with lower regional brain volume and reduced memory more than two decades later.

The five inflammatory markers measured were fibrinogen, albumin, white blood cell count, von Willebrand factor, and factor VIII.

Compared with adults with no elevated midlife inflammatory markers, those with elevations in three or more markers had, on average, 4.6% smaller hippocampal volumes, 5.3% smaller AD signature region volumes, and 5.7% smaller occipital lobe volumes.

The aforementioned, along with C-reactive protein and numerous genetic markers, can now give us a pretty clean view of what our brain will look like if we do not control inflammation.

One thing you can do that needs no individual evaluation is to avoid or severely limitsugar, one of the most inflammatory food sources we consume.

Another thing we have mentioned ad nauseam, omega-3 fatty acids, which we primarily get through eating fatty fish or fish oil supplements, can dampen inflammatory reactions. Inflammatory reactions are very important in combating infections, but they can be harmful if activated too strongly or in the absence of bacteria and viruses, like in autoimmune diseases and organ transplants.

There has been a major discovery of a new class of molecules in the brain that synchronize cell-to-cell communication and neuroinflammation/immune activity in response to injury or diseases. Elovanoids (ELVs) are bioactive chemical messengers made from omega-3 fatty acids. They are released on demand when cells are damaged or stressed.

Researchers found that elovanoids not only protected neuronal cells and promoted their survival, but helped maintain their integrity and stability, as stated in last month's issue of Science Advances.

Elovanoids may play a central role as synaptic organizers, especially important in conditions resulting from synaptic dysfunction such as autism or amyotropic lateral sclerosis, for which we have no therapeutic answers.

Exciting stuff!
