Green Tea and the Cholesterol Effect
Bonnie and Steve: There have been studies suggesting that green tea improves cardiovascular disease risk factors, including lipids. However, current evidence has been predominantly based on small, short-term randomized controlled trials.

The aim of a study in the November issue of American Journal of Clinical Nutritionwas to examine the efficacy and impact of green tea extract (GTE) supplementation high in epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) on blood lipids in healthy postmenopausal women.

Participants were randomly assigned to receive GTE or placebo. They consumed either GTE or identical placebo capsules daily for 12 months.

Compared with placebo, one year supplementation with GTE capsules resulted in a significant reduction in circulating total cholesterol (−2.1%), LDL cholesterol (−4.1%) and non-HDL cholesterol (−3.1%).

Among all the other notable benefits from consuming green tea, whether by extract or beverage, lipid lowering now ranks as one of the most important reasons to make it a weekly staple for your menu.
