Study: Vit-C, Antioxidants Shine for Aging, Bones
Steve and Bonnie: A study in last week's American Journal of Clinical Nutrition screened a large subject pool over a 13 year period and found that higher vitamin C intake was significantly associated with higher heel ultrasound measures in men and women. Moreover, higher blood concentrations of vitamin C were significantly associated with reduced fracture risk in men.

We love this study because it was done over a long period of time in healthy subjects. This is how nutrient studies should be conducted.

This is not the first study to associate vitamin C levels with bone health. Recent studies have also shown positive association in reduced fracture risk for women.

Healthy Aging
In this month's American Journal of Epidemiology, researchers investigated healthy aging 5 years after daily nutritional-dose supplementation with antioxidant nutrients in subjects (average age of 65.3 years) free of chronic disease.

During 1994-2002, participants received a daily combination of vitamin C, beta-carotene, vitamin E, selenium, and zinc or placebo. From 2007-2009, healthy aging was assessed in by using multiple criteria, including the absence of major chronic disease and good physical and cognitive functioning.

Very few prospective studies have examined the link between nutritional factors and healthy aging, and no study has yet investigated the role of antioxidant nutrients.

Significant beneficial effects of the supplementation were observed in 3 specific subgroups of participants: those with low baseline vitamin C levels, those with low baseline zinc levels, and those consuming less than 5 portions of fruits and vegetables per day.

Supplementation was associated with a greater healthy aging probability, especially among men with low vitamin C and zinc levels. The results were not as dramatic for the female subjects because their overall antioxidant levels were better to begin with.

In conclusion, the researchers suggest an adequate supply of antioxidant nutrients have a beneficial role for healthy aging. Surprise, surprise!
