NCI Well Connect

Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that the World Health Organization is just now recommending farmers stop the routine use of antibiotics to promote growth and prevent disease in healthy animals? How long have we known that prolonged low level use of antibiotics in animals can promote resistance in bacteria and viruses, which can then be passed into the human food chain!

Say Yes to the Right Fiber
Bonnie and Steve: (chicory root pictured above)
Constipation is one of the most common complaints we get from clients. While there are myriad reasons why constipation occurs (medication side effects, intestinal diseases, food intolerances, and microflora imbalances to name a few), utilizing fiber to assist with constipation is more complicated than it may seem.

One thing is for certain. Fiber, even though it provides no nutrient value to us, is absolutely critical for an optimally functioning body.

First, fiber provides bulk for our intestines. Why is this important? While our intestines work well to move food through the system through muscle movements, having fiber bulk helps to not only move food through the system, but pulls food remnants/toxic waste from the inner membranes of the intestines, and keeps a positive pH balance.

Second, fiber fosters beneficial flora proliferation. This is important because beneficial flora contribute essential nutrients that our intestinal receptors absorb and deliver to the cells.

Third, fiber is the prime ingredient for optimal poop. Let's face it, many of us are obsessed with our stool. You know what they say...happy stool and we're cool! All kidding aside, without sufficient bulk, our stool suffers.

The problem with fiber is that our standard eating pattern is not conducive to getting enough of it. Then, when we try to supplement with fiber or even worse, prescription laxatives, we create a host of other issues.

  • All fiber is not created equal. There is soluble and insoluble fiber. You need both. A balance of 75% insoluble to 25% soluble is optimal.
  • The best way to get fiber is through your diet in order of importance: vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds, whole grains, and supplement.
  • Supplemental fiber supplements can be highly reactive. For example, so many clients have reactions to Metamucil, which is psyllium. Benefiber is wheat dextrin. Citrucel powder, which is methylcellulose, a wonderful form of fiber, but has its own set of issues. The other ingredients besides methylcellulose are awful: Citric Acid, Dibasic Calcium Phosphate, FD&C Yellow #6 Lake, Maltodextrin, Orange Flavors (Natural and Artificial). Potassium Citrate, Riboflavin, Sucrose, Titanium Dioxide, Tricalcium Phosphate. The sugar-free and caplet versions are even worse.
  • For supplemental fiber, we recommend inulin (from chicory or agave). Inulin provides soluble fiber, which is tougher to get in the diet. It also can act as a de facto sweetener, can help with blood sugar, and is well tolerated in most individuals unless they have IBS.
If you cannot tolerate Metamucil, Benefiber, or Citrucel, then you must get enough from your diet, which you can easily do if you eat optimally. Like you needed another reason to eat your fruit, veggies, whole grains, nuts and seeds?

If you have specific circumstances that do not allow you to eat these fiber sources, you need to see a licensed health professional for guidance.
Genetic Wellness Testing & Analysis
Cognition & Mental Health

Bonnie and Steve:It only takes a few simple steps to get individualized genetic nutritional support. Test your genome. We translate the results in a way you can understand. We target your individualized needs with nutritional support that can be easily implemented.

Pure Genomics helps the patient with:
  1. Reaffirmation for why existing patients should continue to adhere to their optimal diet and lifestyle. Genes are the deepest layer of individualization. When a patient is doing incredibly well despite horrible genetic deficiencies, it is a strong deterrent to fall off the wagon.
  2. Creates the last thrust of motivation for a patient who is having trouble adhering to their diet and lifestyle protocol.
  3. Provides incredible proof for prevention of family disease history. Connects the dots for many of our patients.
  4. Is a strong component for new patient screenings, especially for methylation, detoxification, antioxidant defense, weight management, metabolic health, memory and cognition, mental health, and essential fatty acid, vitamin A, and vitamin D absorption.

Small Business Saturday

Steve: Big business has Black Friday. Online retailers have Cyber Monday. We have Small Business Saturday.

Keeping our business small has allowed to establish decades-old relationships with clients that span three generations. This does not happen if we sell out to a vitamin conglomerate or wellness goliath. We want to keep it this way.

Show your support for Nutritional Concepts and small business. Stay tuned for our early Saturday morning newsletter!
Far Infrared Sauna Therapy
Steve: Traditional saunas emit direct heat. Far Infrared uses light to create heat. Far infrared run at much milder temperatures, but travels much deeper into the body, which is why you sweat more vigorously.

Far Infrared Therapy offers numerous therapeutic benefits, most importantly enhanced detoxification. Many of our clients use it to relieve painful joints, rev up metabolism, and remove buildup of heavy metals.

Far Infrared has shown to draw out 15 to 20% more heavy metals (i.e., mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic), hormone-disrupting chemicals, sulfuric acid, ammonia, uric-acid, and fat-soluble toxins than traditional saunas.

A recent study from Age and Ageing, showed that healthy subjects whose sauna use averaged 4 to 7 times per week were 66% less likely to develop dementia at 20-year follow-up than those who used a sauna once a week. In addition, they had a 65% risk reduction for Alzheimer's Disease.

Recent studies in JAMA Internal Medicine and American Journal of Hypertension found that increased frequency of sauna bathing reduced the risk of sudden cardiac death, coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and all-cause mortality.
