Dear Valued Subscriber,

Did you know that the title of a study from the November 7th issue ofAmerican Journal of Lifestyle Medicine is "What to say to your patients about diet in 30 seconds?"

In a sad display of what it is like for health care providers today, this is about as much time as many physicians have during routine visits to discuss diet.

What was the author's (a registered dietitian) advice? "Include a fruit or vegetable with every meal and snack, and eat meals together." Ah, if life was that easy. First, many people have a limited scope of the fruits and vegetables available to them. Second, modern lifestyles make eating together difficult. Sorry, a 30 second spiel won't cut it.

Did you know that "by the year 2040, we will get about 1.5 to two times the amount of pollen that we have now," says Leonard Bielory, MD, professor of environmental prediction at Rutgers University. Pollen production will also start earlier and peak earlier. His findings, presented at the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology annual meeting, was echoed by researchers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Have a happy, healthy week. Bonnie and Steve Minsky

Micronutrient Deficiencies Linked to Metabolic Syndrome in Children.

Specific micronutrients, including retinol (vitamin A), retinyl esters (vitamin A), carotenoids (alpha carotene, beta carotene, beta cryptoxanthin, lutein+zeaxanthin, and total lycopene), vitamin E, and vitamin C have antiinflammatory effects. Moreover, their properties have shown to reduce oxidative stress, a process that accompanies the pathogenesis of many chronic diseases. It is still largely unknown whether they are associated with the occurrence of metabolic syndrome (obesity and diabetes) in the adolescent U.S. population between 12 to 19 years old.

Metabolic Syndrome was defined by the International Diabetes Federation criteria. Other non-MetS outcomes relying on blood measurements were insulin resistance, C-reactive protein (CRP), and hyperuricemia.

Adolescents with MetS had consistently lower carotenoid concentrations compared with their counterparts without MetS. Total carotenoids were also lower when insulin resistance and CRP was high. Vitamin C was lower if uric acid levels were high. Retinol+retinyl esters exhibited an inverse relationship with CRP.

In conclusion, this Journal of Nutrition study shows the importance of understanding and addressing micronutrient deficiencies in adolescent U.S. children.
