NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
November 30, 2016
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that two clinical trials suggest that more than 106,000 high-risk early preterm births could be avoided in the U.S. each year if pregnant women took daily supplements of the omega-3 fatty acid, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)? The study was published in last month's Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids.

Vitamin D Improves Autism Symptoms
Bonnie and Steve: While it has been previously reported that there is vitamin D deficiency in autistic children, there is a lack of randomized controlled trials of vitamin D supplementation in autistic children.

A study in the October issue of Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry is the first to assess the effects of vitamin D supplementation in the core symptoms of autism in children.

The study was double-blinded and randomized in ASD boys and girls aged 3-10 years to receive vitamin D3 or placebo for four months. Vitamin D blood levels were measured at the beginning and at the end of the study.

The daily doses used in the therapy group was 300 IU vitamin D3 per kilogram of weight per day, not to exceed 5,000 IU per day.

The autism symptoms of the children improved significantly, following 4-month vitamin D3 supplementation, but not in the placebo group. Their vitamin D levels also rose significantly.

It is a no-brainer for anyone with autism symptoms or autism diagnosis to have their vitamin D levels checked and supplement as needed.
