Nutritional Concepts Mid-Week Brief
January 16, 2013
Dear Valued Subscriber,

We just saw The Coca Cola Company's commercial trumpeting their efforts to confront obesity. It made us want to hurl. Here is the link to the commercial. The only thing this hypocritical that comes to mind is when the cigarette companies tried to get out in front of their issues because of looming litigation.

While there is plenty of blame to go around for the obesity epidemic, there is no party more egregious than the soft drink makers. Now, armed with a new touchy-feely ad campaign, they try to absolve themselves from blame by saying that all calories matter, not just soft drinks.

Of course, they do not mention that empty calories, like the ones in soft drinks, actually do not matter, except to add weight and create blood sugar imbalances.

Of course, they do not mention that decades of research shows that sugar, especially in liquid form, is as addictive as narcotics.

Of course, they do not mention that zero calorie soft drinks made with artificial sweeteners also put on the pounds, because fat cells proliferate to house foreign chemicals that could harm healthy tissue.

Of course, they do not mention that as soft drink sales wane in the United States, they have flooded other parts of the world, the third world in particular, with their products. Is it a surprise that these countries are now seeing skyrocketing numbers of obesity and diabetes?

The commercial states, "The long-term health of our families and our country is at stake, and as the nation's leading beverage company, we can play an important role."

Have they no shame? This company contributed to the leading public health emergency of our generation. The only role Coca Cola should play is whistle blower. Blow the whistle on itself and all the others like it who profited wildly on sweetness at the expense of human health. Then, and only then, beg for forgiveness.

Have a happy, healthy day. Bonnie and Steve Minsky

Other Flu (Not Influenza) on the Uptick.
Influenza and Stomach Flu are very different viruses. Influenza mirrors symptoms of the common cold, except more often severe (i.e. fever, fatigue, aches). The stomach flu is caused by rotavirus (in children) or norovirus (in adults). Symptoms of the stomach flu are vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, fever, and/or chills.

While almost every state in the union has a high rate of influenza currently, several states are seeing an uptick in stomach flu cases.

Treat the stomach flu like you would a minor case of food poisoning. Make sure you drink fluids with added electrolytes to prevent dehydration. Supplement with probiotics. Drink weak homemade chicken broth/soup, if tolerated. When you can eat solid food, adhere to a modified BRAT diet (banana, rice, apple sauce, and turkey) and chicken broth/soup for a day or two. Quadruple your normal dose of probiotic (even for 3-4 days after you feel better). When you start feeling normal again, ease back into your normal diet. You are still in a weakened state and do not want to succumb to a different infection.

You may be familiar with the preventive measures for stomach flu and influenza:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water (better than hand sanitizer).
  • Avoid sharing food, utensils, and drinking cups with other people.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth without first washing your hands.
  • Try not to spend time with anyone who's in the contagious stages of their illness, even though that is hard to gauge.
  • Get adequate sleep.
  • Try to manage stress.
  • Exercise consistently, but moderately.
  • Take your supplements, especially probiotics and vitamin D.
  • Avoiding sugar, in all forms except fruit, is the most detrimental dietary factor for weakening our immune defenses.

If you happen to catch something, it does not mean that you are unhealthy. It is easy for a virulent bug to creep up and overrun you at a moment of weakness due to stress, or you ate something that temporarily weakened your immune system. The real mettle of a healthy host is how you fight the virulent bug. Curtailing the severity and number of days you are affected with it shows your mettle.

This does not mean that you should run out and get an antibiotic or flu medication. Antibiotics do nothing for viral infections. As reported yesterday in Annals of Family Medicine, for example, the normal progression of a cough from infection is two to three weeks, on average, and antibiotics do not help. Flu medication is unproven and can have serious side effects.

Stay true to your "optimal self". Maybe you won't make it through this season unscathed, but you can certainly get through it better than most.
