Amazing to think that we have been publishing for 13 years. Many of you have been with us from the start. We have come a long way, as evidenced by the amateurish inaugural June 2000 issue, but no less fascinating to see where we were nutritionally.

Bonnie and I want to thank you for your support. We will continue to bring you the most forward-thinking, honest, and well-researched content we are capable of.

Magnesium

An upcoming study from the Journal of Sport Science examined professional male volleyball players who received either 350 mg. of magnesium or placebo every day for four weeks. Researchers evaluated their plyometric (squat jump, counter movement jump and counter movement jump with arm swing) as well as their isokinetic (peak torque, potency and total work) movements before and after supplementation.

"Significant increases of up to 3 cm in counter movement jump and counter movement jump with arm swing values were detected" in the players that took the magnesium, but not in the control group.

 

The study's authors concluded that "magnesium supplementation improved alactic anaerobic metabolism, even though the players were not magnesium-deficient," which may make all the difference athletically.

 
Vitamin D
A new study published in the December issue of Nutrition and Metabolism suggests that 4,000 IU a day of vitamin D is a great sport-recovery nutrient. According to the authors, you regain strength faster and biomarkers of muscle damage will be in better shape.
 
The researchers studied healthy and moderately active adults males. Half received the vitamin D and the other half a placebo for 35 days. At the end of the supplementation period, subjects performed a series of exercises intended to induce muscle damage. They found that the supplement increased serum vitamin D concentrations and enhanced the recovery in peak isometric force after the exercises. It also reduced the immediate and delayed increase in circulating biomarkers that indicate muscle damage.
