Dear Valued Subscriber,

Did you know that a recent study led by Human Research Council found that 84 percent of US vegetarians give up their diet and turn back to eating meat? The most common motives for abandoning the no-meat diet are lack of community support, sticking out of the crowd, and cravings for meat.

Celiac and Gluten Issues Go Way Beyond the Classic Symptoms

According to a new study in BMC Gastroenterology, the classical set of celiac disease symptoms no longer reflects the profile of most newly-diagnosed patients. Instead, doctors should take other symptoms into account and consider the possibility of celiac disease and gluten intolerance, even when patients don't fit the old image of the condition.

Fewer people are presenting with the classical diarrhea and more with non-classical or silent presentation, both in adults and children. Among celiac patients diagnosed over the course of 15 years in the study, 79% had symptoms when they were diagnosed. But most of their problems were not the typical diarrhea and weight loss, but rather "non-classical" issues like bloating, osteoporosis and anemia. Diarrhea was a symptom in just 27%.

Indeed, classical symptoms became less common over the years, decreasing from 47% of patients during the first 10 years to 13% in the last five. Meanwhile, other problems, as well as a lack of any significant related illness, increased by more than 86%.

"A high proportion of celiac disease patients did not show any gastrointestinal symptom, but they displayed extra-intestinal manifestations such as iron-deficiency anemia, unexplained osteoporosis, abnormalities of liver-function tests and recurrent miscarriages," the lead researcher stated.

The most common illness associated with celiac was thyroid disease. Only half the patients had severe intestinal damage.

In later years, more patients were diagnosed with blood tests. That may be one factor accounting for the changing pattern of typical symptoms, because the effects of gluten weren't as severe yet.

Bonnie: While some celiac specialists understand the varied symptoms, most physicians do not. Only 17% of people with the disease are actually diagnosed. The message is if you think you've got celiac disease, don't just go on a gluten-free diet, test for it. But doctors need to keep in mind that celiac disease is a very frequent food intolerance, and needs to be treated as such.

Get Me Through New Year's Tips
  1. Stay home! New Year's is routinely one of the most overrated celebrations of the year.
  2. Make sure you eat enough before you go out. Being on an empty stomach is no way to attack New Year's.
  3. Load up on electrolytes before and after the evening. Drinking electrolyte waters with extra doses of magnesium glycinate will hydrate and replenish lost nutrients.
  4. Nourish the liver with straight silymarin/milk thistle or our favorite liver complex.
  5. Exercise the next morning to get the blood flowing and start the detoxification process!
