Fish Oil: Therapeutic and Preventive

Alzheimer's disease
New research published in The FASEB Journal suggests that omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil could improve the function of the glymphatic system, which facilitates the clearance of waste from the brain, and promote the clearance of metabolites including amyloid-beta peptides, a primary culprit in Alzheimer's disease. "These now-famous fatty acids have been the subject of major studies both in academia and industry. Just when we thought we had heard everything, here is something new, and it is provocative indeed," said the lead author.

Autoimmune Disorders
Researchers have found that consuming the omega-3 fatty acid, DHA, can stop a known trigger of lupus and potentially other autoimmune disorders. They discovered that when lupus was triggered by crystalline silica, a mineral that's linked to human autoimmunity, DHA blocked the activation of the disease, according to a study inPLoS One. They hypothesize that DHA helps cells send an anti-inflammatory signal to the body so it doesn't overcompensate and trigger an autoimmune response.

Heart Disease
Two studies from Mayo Clinic Proceedings confirm the American Heart Association recommendation of at least 1 gram per day of EPA and DHA omega-3 is reasonable to lower risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) events. The findings also suggest that patients with high levels of triglycerides or LDL cholesterol would benefit most by optimal intake of omega-3 fatty acids.

Optimal Blood Pressure
Healthy young people may be able to help prevent the onset of high blood pressure by eating diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids, according to a study presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2016. Adults in the highest quarter of omega-3 fatty acid levels had significantly lower blood pressure compared to those with the least omega-3 fatty acids in their blood.

Prenatal or Pregnant?
Two studies from American Journal of Epidemiology found that suboptimal prenatal and midpregnancy omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acid ratio is associated with more child autistic traits, which is largely accounted for by higher omega-6 levels.

Supplementing a with omega-3 fatty acids during the third trimester of pregnancy may decrease the risk for persistent wheeze and asthma during her child's first 5 years, according to a new study in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Women in their fertility years and during pregnancy should make sure to eat fatty fish at least twice weekly or take supplemental fish oil. This way, acheiivng a 2:1 omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is easier to accomplish. The average ratio for an American is a whopping 15:1.
