Dear Valued Subscriber,

Did you know that a recent study in Therapeutic Advances in Gastroenterology suggests that "modulating the gut microbiota should be considered as a therapeutic strategy to treat chronic disease. The approaches investigated include the use of prebiotics, supplementation with probiotics, reconstitution of bacterial populations by fecal transplantation or manipulate the gut microbiota in a way that will benefit host health."

You would not have read this in research journals as little as five years ago!

Have a happy, healthy week. Bonnie and Steve Minsky

Faint About the Heart No Longer.

After all the research we pass along about magnesium and CoenzymeQ10, you think the message would have hit home. However, there are always one or more examples each week that remind us that we must continue to be vigilant in getting the word out.

Magnesium

Increased intakes of magnesium may help people with a high cardiovascular risk live longer, according to a new study from The Journal of Nutrition. A study of 7,216 men and women aged between 55 and 80 found that those with the highest average dietary intakes of magnesium (442 mg/day) had a 34% reduction in risk of mortality from cardiovascular issues and cancer, compared to people with the lowest average intakes (312 mg/day).

CoQ10

The purpose of another study from The Journal of Nutrition was to investigate the effects of a coenzyme Q10 supplement (300 mg/d) on antioxidation and anti-inflammation in patients who have coronary artery disease during statin therapy.

The levels of the plasma coenzyme Q10 and antioxidant enzymes activities were significantly higher after coenzyme Q10 supplementation. The levels of inflammatory and antioxidant markers were significantly lower after coenzyme Q10 supplementation after 12 weeks in the CoQ10 group versus placebo group.

In another study, supplementing a combination of coenzyme Q10 and selenium for two years may decrease the deterioration of cardiac function and cardiac death in participants with moderate heart failure.

Researchers in a Scandinavian Cardiovascular Journal study found that two year supplementation of coenzyme Q10 and selenium reduced the progression of heart failure based on heart wall tension and reduced death due to cardiovascular disease in participants with moderate heart failure [the treatment group (1.8%) compared to placebo (10.6%)].

Steve: With these two nutrients and the brand new eating style Bonnie discussed in a recent issue NCI Well Connect, you will be faint of heart no longer.
