Dear Valued Subscriber,

Did you know that a study from the December issue of Headache found that non-migraine headaches were associated with low levels of serum 25(OH)D, which is the lab term for vitamin D3 level?

Did you know that a study January's Expert Reviews of Cardiovascular Therapy states that just a short exposure to statin can cause a significant decrease in CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10) blood concentrations and that the decrease in blood CoQ10 levels may explain the myalgia (muscle pain) and exercise intolerance associated with statin use? Furthermore, the author states: "In current practice, CoQ10 seems to be a safe and reasonably effective supplement for treating statin myalgias."

Have a healthy and fruitful 2013! Bonnie and Steve Minsky

Being Overweight Lowers Mortality Risk?
Bonnie and Steve: A study published last week in JAMA created a media firestorm. And for good reason. The findings concluded that overweight subjects lived longer than normal, underweight, and obese subjects.

Besides being a meta-analysis, where studies can be hand-picked to match whatever results the author desires, the study focused on Body Mass Index (BMI) as the indicator of mortality risk.

We have never used BMI, which is based upon height and weight. We have many clients that would be considered overweight or obese based upon BMI. However, they are far from it. They simply have wonderful muscle structure. Muscle weighs more than fat.

Measuring height and weight simply won't cut it. Measuring percentage of body fat by waist-hip ratio or water displacement are better indicators. However, they still do not present the whole picture for mortality risk. As with anything, mortality risk is multifaceted and must be treated as such.

Shame on the CDC for approving the manuscript from one of its own. We are at a time in history where the human race has never been this overweight. In fact, for the first time in recorded history, there are more overfed humans than underfed. A study presenting a message like this is not what public health needs right now.
