CoQ10 Is the Real Energizer Bunny
Bonnie and Steve: The health benefits of exercise are numerous. But with regular and strenuous exercise comes increased levels of cell damage which, over time, may decrease performance, alter several hormonal processes, and increase susceptibility to infection. As a result, finding ways to maintain cellular health after exercise is important.

Exercise Recovery
Fortunately, research suggests that coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) may be a benefit to cellular health after strenuous exercise. A study from the May issue of Biofactorsinvolved healthy, well-trained male athletes aged 30 to 46. They received either 200 milligrams of CoQ10 or placebo per day.

After two weeks of CoQ10 supplementation, the CoQ10 group showed two significant improvements compared to the placebo group:
  • Urinary levels of isoprostanes, regarded as one of the most widely recognized and trusted biomarkers for measuring cell damage, especially during physical exercise, stayed the same in the CoQ10 group between the start of the study and after the first exercise period while increasing by 46% in the placebo group.
     
  • Blood levels of 8OHdG, regarded as a critical marker of oxidative stress in the blood, decreased by 15.4% in the CoQ10 group between the start of the study and after the 24-hour rest period after the first exercise session compared to a 0.3% decrease in the placebo group.
Hence, this substance is a wonderful muscle-protective supplement.

Neurodegenerative Disease
Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is an intractable neurodegenerative disease characterized by autonomic failure in addition to various combinations of parkinsonism, cerebellar ataxia, and pyramidal dysfunction.

It has recently been reported that functionally impaired variants of the COQ2 gene, which helps CoQ10 function, are associated with MSA. However, little is known about the role of CoQ10 in the pathogenesis of MSA.

In a study from the June issue of JAMA Neurology, decreased levels of blood CoQ10 in patients with MSA regardless of the COQ2 genotype were found, supporting a hypothesis that supplementation with CoQ10 is beneficial for patients with MSA.

CoQ10 With Statins
Suffice it to say, the aforementioned are just a few reasons why you should take CoQ10. However, if you take statin medication, CoQ10 is a must. Statins deplete CoQ10 and lead to numerous side effects, including severe muscle pain, which many of you have experienced.

Overall Energy
Finally, there are few nutrients better equipped to help overall energy for getting through the day than CoQ10. Try it for three months and see if it helps you.
