NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
February 24, 2016
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that breastfed babies need at least 400IU supplemental vitamin D3 daily? Most of you who are clients already know this. Please pass it along.

According to a new study in the American Journal of Public Health, researchers predicted 16% of 2-year-olds breastfeeding but not receiving extra vitamin D would be seriously deficient, and by age 3, that would rise to 29%.

Have a happy, healthy day. Steve and Bonnie

Blocking Harmoniously vs Harmfully
Steve and Bonnie: In last week's eNews Alert, we mentioned how the class of medications called PPIs increase the risk of dementia. PPIs are the poster child for when blocking a function, in this case the production of stomach acid, severe side effects usually follow.

Many medications block biochemical functions, which is why there are so many side effects associated with them.

However, there are other substances that can block without detrimental side effects. The reason this occurs is because these substances have learned how to work with our bodies over millennia. In essence, they block harmoniously.

For example, researchers in a study in Arthritis and Rheumatology have identified a new approach to combating the joint pain, inflammation and tissue damage caused by rheumatoid arthritis. The impetus of this study came from the fact that existing drugs for rheumatoid arthritis are expensive, immunosuppressive, and unsuitable for long-term use because of their horrific side effects.

The team evaluated a phytochemical called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), which is a molecule with anti-inflammatory properties found in green tea. The study suggests that EGCG has high potential as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis because of how effectively the molecule blocks the effects of the disease without blocking other cellular functions.

The researchers confirmed their findings in a animal model of human rheumatoid arthritis, where they observed that ankle swelling in animals given EGCG in a 10-day treatment plan was markedly reduced.

Of course, this would take high, therapeutic doses to target full-blown rheumatoid arthritis. However, drinking green tea daily, if well tolerated, can cumulatively help inflammation.

Why Is This Graphic So Important?
Bonnie and Steve: If one or more of these boxes are yellow or red, then you have genetic deficiencies that may impair your ability to break down and move toxins from your body. The great thing is that you can prevent impairment with diet, lifestyle, and nutrient modification.

Twinlab Quercetin + C on Long-Term Backorder
QuercetinPlusC
While this should not come as a surprise given the issues Twinlab has had keeping items in stock over the last 18 months, we have been notified by Twinlab that Quercetin + C in both sizes will not be available until August at the earliest. In addition, Twinlab Allergy C has been discontinued and will no longer be available.

To prevent these frequent occurrences, we are looking into the possibility of making our own Quercetin + C product, much like what we did with Alka Support. This process however, will take at least two to three months.

In the interim, we have individualized alternatives:

MOST ECONOMICAL OPTION:
Pure Encapsulations Ester-C & Flavanoids
-Contains quercetin and rutin, both wonderful antinflammatory flavanoids that also enhance the action of vitamin C. A bit less quercetin than what was in the Twinlab.
-One capsule for one capsule exchange
-If taking for allergies, you can add extra, separate Quercetin during the height of the season.
-If taking for severe inflammation, then you can add one or two more Quercetin capsules.
-Ester-C is well tolerated for mild to moderate corn intolerants.

IF SEVERELY CORN INTOLERANT:
Pure Encapsulations Quercetin AND Ecological Formulas Vitamin C-1000 (tapioca source)
One to two capsules Quercetin AND only one vitamin C is necessary.

FOR PURELY ALLERGY REASONS:
Metagenics Sinuplex
-Mirrors the old Twinlab Allergy Fighters the most.
-Cannot take if pineapple sensitive.
We appreciate your continued patronage and support.

Have a happy, healthy day,
