NCI Well Connect: February 8, 2016
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that Apple announced last week that the new version of iOS 9 would include a feature called Night Shift, aimed to limit iPhone user's exposure to bright, blue-tinted phone screens in the evening.

Research suggests that the kind of light emitted from hi-res smartphone screens wreaks havoc on our circadian rhythms, increasing the time it takes to fall asleep and even interferes with overall sleep quality. Night Shift will change the color temperature of iPhone displays depending on the time of day.

Night Shift uses a iOS device's clock and geolocation to determine impending nightfall. As the sun sets, users will see the blues drain out of screens, leaving behind a warm orange glow. In the morning, it returns the display to its regular settings.

The update should be made available to the general public in the coming weeks. While this is a positive step, we still recommend sticking with a good old book or magazine.

Have a happy, healthy day. Steve and Bonnie

Bonnie and Steve:
A new study in the February issue of American Journal of Epidemiology confirms the benefit of high fatty fish consumption during pregnancy for child neuropsychological development. Researchers evaluated mother-child pairs at the ages of 14 months and 5 years.

Overall, consumption of seafood above the recommended limit of 340 grams per week was associated with increments in neuropsychological scores. Consumption of large fatty fish, especially, showed a positive association in neuropsychological benefits, including improvements in cognitive functioning and some protection from autism-spectrum traits.

For older people, the brain-protecting benefits of eating fish outweigh any potential harms from mercury, according to a study in the latest issue of JAMA.

Researchers found that older adults who ate the most fish or seafood did have higher brain levels of mercury, but didn't seem to suffer any ill effects from it. And if they also had a gene variant that raises risk for Alzheimer's disease, high fish intake seemed to lower their risk of developing the disease.

It did not take much either. Those that ate fish or seafood one or more times a week had less Alzheimer's-related brain pathology, such as plaques or neurofibrillary tangles, compared to those who ate little or no seafood.

Bonnie and Steve: If one or more of these boxes are yellow or red, then you have genetic deficiencies that may impair your ability to break down and move toxins from your body. You can prevent impairment with diet, lifestyle, and nutrient modification.

Far Infrared Sauna Therapy
It is always the right time to experience Far Infrared Sauna Therapy.

Aside from the fact that you are taking one hour out of your busy lives to relax, Far Infrared Therapy offers numerous therapeutic benefits, most importantly enhanced detoxification. Many clients use it to relieve painful joints, rev up metabolism, and remove buildup of heavy metals.

A recent study in JAMA Internal Medicine found that increased frequency of sauna bathing reduced the risk of sudden cardiac death, coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, and all-cause mortality.
