NCI Well Connect: March 14, 2016
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that physicians should screen for colorectal cancer in asymptomatic, low-risk adults aged 50 to 74 years every two years using fecal occult blood testing, or flexible sigmoidoscopy every 10 years, rather than colonoscopy?

According to a new guideline from the Canadian Medical Association Journal, flexible sigmoidoscopy inserts a flexible scope to view the lower portion of the colon and rectum rather than the entire tract.

Still Drink Sweetened and Artificially Sweetened Beverages?
Bonnie and Steve: The latest in a long line of studies showing the potential for sweetened beverages such as soda to have a significantly poor effect on health suggests daily consumption increases the risk of developing heart failure.

A large study from British Medical Journal found drinking two or more sweetened beverages per day increases the risk for heart failure by 23 percent in men over a 12 year period.

Other recent studies have found daily consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks can increase the risk for diabetes, heart disease, and stroke, and for fatty liver disease in men and women.

A recent study in Nature examined non-caloric artificial sweeteners (NAS). The researchers state that while NAS consumption is considered safe and beneficial owing to their low caloric content, supporting scientific data remain sparse and controversial.

They demonstrated that consumption of commonly used NAS formulations drives the development of glucose intolerance through major alterations to the intestinal microbiota.

They created a new term: NAS-induced dysbiosis. Because of this and the metabolic abnormalities they create, the authors are calling for a reassessment of massive NAS usage.

Is it a coincidence that clients who present with GI disorders from consuming too much NAS have almost immediate relief when they stop consuming them? Of course not. If they stop continuously killing their beneficial microbes, the GI issues go away.
Genetics
Why Is This Graphic So Important?
Bonnie and Steve: If one or more of these boxes are yellow or red, then you have genetic deficiencies that may impair your ability to break down and move toxins from your body. You can prevent impairment with diet, lifestyle, and nutrient modification.

Far Infrared Sauna Therapy
It is always the right time to experience Far Infrared Sauna Therapy.

Aside from the fact that you are taking one hour out of your busy lives to relax, Far Infrared Therapy offers numerous therapeutic benefits, most importantly enhanced detoxification. Many clients use it to relieve painful joints, rev up metabolism, and remove buildup of heavy metals.

Sweat samples reveal traces of a number of toxins, including mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, and some hormone-disrupting chemicals. Far Infrared draws from deep within the dermal tissue.

A recent study in JAMA Internal Medicine found that increased frequency of sauna bathing reduced the risk of sudden cardiac death, coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, and all-cause mortality.

Twinlab Quercetin + C
Not Available Until at Least August
QuercetinPlusC
While this should not come as a surprise given the issues Twinlab has had keeping items in stock over the last 18 months, we have been notified by Twinlab that Quercetin + C in both sizes will not be available until August at the earliest. In addition, Twinlab Allergy C has been discontinued and will no longer be available.

To prevent these frequent occurrences, we are looking into the possibility of making our own Quercetin + C product, much like what we did with Alka Support. This process however, will take at least two to three months.

In the interim, we have individualized alternatives:

MOST ECONOMICAL OPTION:
Pure Encapsulations Ester-C & Flavanoids
-Contains quercetin and rutin, both wonderful antinflammatory flavanoids that also enhance the action of vitamin C. A bit less quercetin than what was in the Twinlab.
-One capsule for one capsule exchange
-If taking for allergies, you can add extra, separate Quercetin during the height of the season.
-If taking for severe inflammation, then you can add one or two more Quercetin capsules.
-Ester-C is well tolerated for mild to moderate corn intolerants.

IF SEVERELY CORN INTOLERANT:
Pure Encapsulations Quercetin AND Ecological Formulas Vitamin C-1000 (tapioca source)
One to two capsules Quercetin AND only one vitamin C is necessary.

FOR PURELY ALLERGY REASONS:
Metagenics Sinuplex
-Mirrors the old Twinlab Allergy Fighters the most.
-Cannot take if pineapple sensitive.
