NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
March 8, 2017
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that based upon new research and physician warnings, large doses of Biotin can skew TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) blood test readings? Note: Biotin does NOT have an adverse effect on the thyroid.

Biotin in doses larger than 1000 mcg. (1 mg.) may falsely lower your TSH number. Biotin is not harmful to your thyroid and does not mean you have low TSH levels.

For the most accurate reading of your thyroid, we suggest avoiding Biotin for at least one month before the blood test.

We recommend Biotin frequently and successfully for brittle nails and hair. However, if after three months of taking Biotin there is no measurable improvement, you do not have to continue with it.

Foods, Quercetin Reduce Pain: Study
Bonnie and Steve: Prior research has shown that the more body fat one has, the more likely they are to be in chronic pain. In a new study from the February issue ofPain, researchers evaluated the degree to which dietary intake of foods with anti-inflammatory effects mediates the relationship of body fat to body pain.

The results state that dietary intake of foods with anti-inflammatory effects can reconcile the relationship of body fat to body pain in healthy men and women.

The foods they most associate with this effect are ones that include high amounts of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids. The other foodstuff they cite as being most associated with anti-inflammatory effects are nuts and seeds.

There are many other foods that contribute to ameliorating inflammation not mentioned in this study, but it is still very exciting to see this study in the most prestigious pain journal in the world.

Quercetin
Researchers in the January issue of Journal of American College of Nutritioninvestigated the effect of quercetin supplementation on inflammation, disease severity, and clinical symptoms in women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

The double-blind, placebo-controlled study examined women with RA who were given quercetin (500 mg/day) or placebo group for 8 weeks.

Quercetin supplementation for 8 weeks significantly reduced erythrocyte sedimentation rate, morning pain, and after-activity pain. Disease activity scores and health assessment scores decreased in the quercetin group compared to placebo and the number of patients with active disease significantly decreased in the quercetin group. Plasma tumor-necroses factor alpha level was significantly reduced in the quercetin group compared to placebo.

We have found the combination of quercetin and isolated omega-3 fatty acid chemicals called "specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs)", to be quite incredible for chronic pain in about half the clients who use the protocol.
