NCI Well Connect: April 10, 2017
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that a study presented at the Endocrine Society's 2017 annual conference, found that just one glass of cow's milk can interfere with the absorption of the oral thyroid hormone, levothyroxine, in an adult?

They did not have thyroid disease or sensitivity to cow's milk. Those who drank milk at the same time as taking the medication, had a significantly lower total T4 absorption than when taking the drug without milk.

The findings support our recommendation to never take thyroid meds at the same time you take a calcium supplements.

A Gift From the Nutrition Gods

Bonnie and Steve: They say timing is everything. In this case, we could not have timed it any better.

The FTO gene, one of the four new genes in our new Weight Maintenance and Metabolic Health Genetic Panel, is the most well-researched gene for predicting obesity risk. One in six people have a genetic deficiency with this gene.

If you have a FTO genetic deficiency, there are numerous dietary and lifestyle modifications that help it function properly. But first, you have to know if you have a deficiency. Second, how valuable would knowing this information really be?

We can now say that it is very important, thanks to a brand-spanking new study from our favorite journal, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The study is the first to show that knowing your genetic risk can motivate us to make appropriate behavioral changes. Two large groups from seven countries were put on a specific eating plan with the specific goal of losing body mass. Both groups were screened for the FTO genetic deficiency.

Individuals who were told that they had an FTO deficiency lost twice as much body mass as the group who were told they did not have the FTO deficiency after six months.

The overriding message from the FTO deficient group was that knowing their genetic risk was the overriding factor in motivating them to do everything possible to lower their body mass.

If you are unclear as to how to start the genetic screening process, contact us or refer to our Genetic Wellness & Analysis section below.

Bonnie and Steve:It only takes a few simple steps to get individualized genetic nutritional support. Test your genome. We translate the results in a way you can understand. We target your individualized needs with nutritional support that can be easily implemented.

Pure Genomics helps the patient with:
  1. Reaffirmation for why existing patients should continue to adhere to their optimal diet and lifestyle. Genes are the deepest layer of individualization. When a patient is doing incredibly well despite horrible genetic deficiencies, it is a strong deterrent to fall off the wagon.
  2. Creates the last thrust of motivation for a patient who is having trouble adhering to their diet and lifestyle protocol.
  3. Provides incredible proof for prevention of family disease history. Connects the dots for many of our patients.
  4. Is a strong component for new patient screenings, especially for methylation, detoxification, antioxidant defense, weight management, metabolic health, and essential fatty acid, vitamin A, and vitamin D absorption.

Far Infrared Sauna Therapy

Steve: Traditional saunas emit direct heat. Far Infrared uses light to create heat. Far infrared run at much milder temperatures, but travels much deeper into the body, which is why you sweat more vigorously.

Far Infrared Therapy offers numerous therapeutic benefits, most importantly enhanced detoxification. Many of our clients use it to relieve painful joints, rev up metabolism, and remove buildup of heavy metals.

Far Infrared has shown to draw out 15 to 20% more heavy metals (i.e., mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic), hormone-disrupting chemicals, sulfuric acid, ammonia, uric-acid, and fat-soluble toxins than traditional saunas.

A recent study from Age and Ageing, showed that healthy subjects whose sauna use averaged 4 to 7 times per week were 66% less likely to develop dementia at 20-year follow-up than those who used a sauna once a week. In addition, they had a 65% risk reduction for Alzheimer's Disease.

A recent study in JAMA Internal Medicine found that increased frequency of sauna bathing reduced the risk of sudden cardiac death, coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, and all-cause mortality.

We are so excited to announce that this week, Pure Genomics will release their next panel, "Weight Management and Metabolic Health".

These three genes, as well as one for essential fatty acids, address numerous questions you may have about which eating plan and lifestyle choices are right for your individual needs.

What should you do now?

Current Pure Genomics Users
Wait for our announcement that the Weight Management and Metabolic Health panel has been uploaded and updated in our Pure Genomics database. Then, you can request by email that we send your updated results.

No, you do not have to send us your 23andMe data again. In fact, you never have to! Once it is in our database, it stays there. And one thing about your genetic data...it does not change. The only thing that changes is how your diet and lifestyle choices affect the expression of your genes.

Not a Pure Genomics User?
If you have never used Pure Genomics before, please refer to this document which will answer all your questions about how to provide us with your genetic data and get started.

What If I Have One or More Genetic Deficiencies in This New Panel?
If you exhibit genetic deficiencies, we highly recommend speaking with either myself or Bonnie to go over the results and tweak your dietary, supplement, and lifestyle choices.

As NCI Well Connect Members, you have one free analysis each year. So if you have not used up your freebie, this would be a good time to. Otherwise, it will be $45 or $75 depending on the amount of time needed.

SPMs and Osteoarthritis
Bonnie: There is strong evidence for the role of SPMs (specialized pro-resolving mediators) in resolving inflammation of the joints that is the hallmark of Osteoarthritis (OA). Receptors for SPMs are present in joints' synovial fluid.

Furthermore, the underlying cause of inflammation present in OA could be the failure of pro-resolving mediators to activate in the joints. Researchers consistently find low SPM levels in OA and Rheumatoid Arthritis patients.

The symptoms of osteoarthritis can be managed with healthy lifestyle behaviors. Getting regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and eating an anti-inflammatory diet may slow the progression of the disease. It cannot be reversed, though, so the goal of treatment is typically pain relief and maintenance of function. Adding SPMs to a healthy lifestyle, including maintaining a healthy weight, may help to ameliorate the symptoms of OA.
