NCI Well Connect: April 11, 2016
Dear Steve,

Congratulations to Sara Marie Giloth, 2016 Bonnie Minsky Award Winner!
(Sara is pictured above with Bonnie)
Every year, University of Illinois-Chicago School of Public Health honors one graduate student with a scholarship in Bonnie's name. The winner needs to exhibit educational excellence with research interests in nutrition as it relates to maternal and child health, women's health, and/or healthy aging.

DID YOU KNOW that we finally take American Express? Hurrah!

DID YOU KNOW that vitamins C, D, and E, along with fruit and a Mediterranean-style diet showed a significant overall reduction in asthma and wheezing, according to a study from the April issue of Allergy?

Have a happy, healthy day. Steve and Bonnie

MSG Toxic to White Blood Cells
Bonnie and Steve: One food additive we have always denounced since it became ubiquitous in food is MSG, or monosodium glutamate.

While many public health experts have supported MSG, as has some research, we have held steadfast in our belief because we have seen the cause and effect in our clientele. A new study from the May issue of Food and Chemical Toxicology backs us up.

The aim was to evaluate the genotoxic potential of MSG. Five different genotoxicity tests were performed in human white blood cells, called lymphocytes. As most of you know, white blood cells are crucial for our immune system.

The results showed that MSG has genotoxic effects on human lymphocytes in vitro.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is one of the most widely used flavor enhancers throughout the world. Six concentrations (250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 and 8000 mg) of MSG were used.

The results indicated that MSG significantly and dose dependently increased the frequencies of chromosome aberrations, causing major DNA damage at all MSG concentrations after one hour of exposure.

The results demonstrate that MSG is genotoxic to the human white blood cells. If you want a properly working immune system, then you should try to avoid MSG whenever possible.
Genetics
New Genetic Test for Vitamin A & D Absorption?

Bonnie and Steve:
If one or more of these boxes are yellow or red, then you have genetic deficiencies that may impair your ability to break down and move toxins from your body. You can prevent impairment with diet, lifestyle, and nutrient modification.

The graphic on top is the methylation cycle. The bottom graphic is coming soon: genes associated with how well you can absorb vitamin A & D. If you have not done your 23andMe genetic test, yet, what are you waiting for?

Twinlab Quercetin + C
Not Available Until at Least August
QuercetinPlusC
While this should not come as a surprise given the issues Twinlab has had keeping items in stock over the last 18 months, we have been notified by Twinlab that Quercetin + C in both sizes will not be available until August at the earliest. In addition, Twinlab Allergy C has been discontinued and will no longer be available.

To prevent these frequent occurrences, we are looking into the possibility of making our own Quercetin + C product, much like what we did with Alka Support. This process however, will take at least two to three months.

In the interim, we have individualized alternatives:

MOST ECONOMICAL OPTION:
Pure Encapsulations Ester-C & Flavanoids
-Contains quercetin and rutin, both wonderful antinflammatory flavanoids that also enhance the action of vitamin C. A bit less quercetin than what was in the Twinlab.
-One capsule for one capsule exchange
-If taking for allergies, you can add extra, separate Quercetin during the height of the season.
-If taking for severe inflammation, then you can add one or two more Quercetin capsules.
-Ester-C is well tolerated for mild to moderate corn intolerants.

IF SEVERELY CORN INTOLERANT:
Pure Encapsulations Quercetin AND Ecological Formulas Vitamin C-1000 (tapioca source)
One to two capsules Quercetin AND only one vitamin C is necessary.

FOR PURELY ALLERGY REASONS:
Metagenics Sinuplex
-Mirrors the old Twinlab Allergy Fighters the most.
-Cannot take if pineapple sensitive.
