NCI Well Connect
April 2, 2018
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that muscle mass equals more insulin sensitivity, which is good? The more sensitive your insulin receptors, the better your blood sugar stays balanced. So exercise and consume enough lean protein!

We keep track of your purchases throughout the year and apply discounts as you hit certain purchase benchmarks.

Did you know that if you have an HSA or FSA debit/credit card, you can use it at Nutritional Concepts? While we cannot guarantee it because every account is different, we are able to process most HSA or FSA credit card transactions.

Metagenics sent a memo alerting us of a problem customers have had purchasing counterfeit and adulterated products from third party sources on the Internet. Pure Encapsulations alerted us to similar occurrences with their products. Overheated products, expired products, labels removed, QR codes removed, and label tampering are all major issues. Read the memo here.

We are not a third party vendor. We are an authorized vendor for Metagenics and Pure Encapsulations.

Have a happy, healthy day! Steve and Bonnie

Healthy Diet Linked to Lower Hip-Fracture Risk
Bonnie and Steve: Eating an overall healthy diet is tied to a lower risk of hip fracture among women over age 50, a study in the February issue of Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics suggests.

While this should not come as a surprise to anyone, it is worth writing about because researchers analyzed decades' worth of dietary and health data from more than 100,000 U.S. subjects.

They found that women who scored highest on the American Healthy Eating Index-2010 scale were about 13% less likely to experience a hip fracture than those whose diets over time scored lowest on that quality measure.

Women have less bone to begin with and go through early bone loss around menopause. This is why diet is even more important in women for preserving bone.

Another reason why you should optimize your diet quality, especially around menopause and beyond, including fundamentals of the Mediterranean style of eating? Estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer risk is reduced, according to a recent Journal of Nutrition study.

The Glymphatic System
Steve: Have you heard of the Glymphatic System? It's what cleanses waste products rather quickly from the brain. If it fails to cleanse as it is meant to, scientists believe this may be an important factor for many brain conditions such as: traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer's disease, stroke, and Parkinson's disease.

The glymphatic system may also be effected by concussions, bumps to the head, car accidents, Bruxism (which was in my last post) and other head traumas that people often brush off. I've had a couple of patients hit their head pretty badly from the garage door as it was closing down, a few smacked their head on cabinet doors, some kids were walloped with baseballs, other kids fell off swing sets, many had bruxism and the list goes on. In my practice I take all kinds of hits on the head seriously, making sure at each visit to release any residual stress and strain on the head and neck.

If you're wondering how the Glymphatic System can be treated when there has been any injury to the head, I suggest Chiropractic Care along with Cranial Techniques. The reason being is that scientists have been studying the effects of craniosacral therapy on helping the glymphatic system. There also is knowledge of the impact that chiropractic care of the of upper neck has on intracranial fluid dynamics.

The next time you hit your head, please don't minimize it and make sure to receive hands on care immediately. If you have a history of any head injury, whether it created a concussion or not, consider a series of treatments.

Far Infrared Sauna Therapy
Steve: Traditional saunas emit direct heat. Far Infrared uses light to create heat. Far infrared run at much milder temperatures, but travels much deeper into the body, which is why you sweat more vigorously.

Far Infrared Therapy offers numerous therapeutic benefits, most importantly enhanced detoxification. Many of our clients use it to relieve painful joints, rev up metabolism, and remove buildup of heavy metals.

Far Infrared has shown to draw out 15 to 20% more heavy metals (i.e., mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic), hormone-disrupting chemicals, sulfuric acid, ammonia, uric-acid, and fat-soluble toxins than traditional saunas.

A recent study from Age and Ageing, showed that healthy subjects whose sauna use averaged 4 to 7 times per week were 66% less likely to develop dementia at 20-year follow-up than those who used a sauna once a week. In addition, they had a 65% risk reduction for Alzheimer's Disease.

Recent studies in JAMA Internal Medicine and American Journal of Hypertension found that increased frequency of sauna bathing reduced the risk of sudden cardiac death, coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and all-cause mortality.
