Death Knell for Artificial Sweeteners?

Bonnie and Steve:
Last week, the headlines were dominated by a study in Stroke, stating that diet soda greatly increased the risk of stroke, all-cause dementia, and Alzheimer's disease dementia.

While this should not come as a shock to you, as there have been numerous studies published in the last five years showing the detrimental effects of diet soda, it should lead us to the broader question: Shouldn't this be a death knell call for artificial sweeteners?

Yes, this study just focused on diet soda. But artificial sweeteners are ubiquitous in food, beverage, and other delivery systems.

If you are chewing artificially sweetened gum, it is really no different from drinking artificially sweetened beverages. What about artificial sweeteners you use in coffee or tea?

Artificial sweeteners are deadly for several reasons. Consumption actually increases the sweet intensity of real nutritive sugar, and this increases overall motivation to eat more food.

When the body becomes conditioned to artificial sweeteners, and then you consume real sugar in any form, the body doesn't release the hormones that regulate blood sugar and blood pressure.

Finally, artificial sweeteners are chemicals to which your body sees as toxic, thus creating inflammation in an effort to rid your body of them. Of course, stroke, dementia, and Alzheimer's all stem from inflammation.

Looking at the positive, sales of all soda drinks decreased about 1.2 percent in the United States in 2016, falling for the 12th year in a row.

However, the per capita consumption of soda drinks, including energy drinks, are still 642 8-ounce servings per year! That's almost 2 servings a day of soda, many of which are artificially sweetened. This does not take into account any other artificially sweetened items the average American consumes on a daily basis.

Please educate anyone you care about regarding the dangers of artificial sweeteners!
