NCI Well Connect: April 4, 2016
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that Constant Contact has honored our eNewsletter with the All Star Award for the 8th year in a row? Only 10% of their 5 million customers receive it. This could not happen without your continued interest in our content. Thank you!

DID YOU KNOW that we now take American Express? Hurrah!

DID YOU KNOW that young children are consuming, on average, the equivalent of 5,543 sugar cubes each year? Yikes!

Have a happy, healthy day. Steve and Bonnie

Tips to Lower Stroke Risk
Bonnie and Steve: In last month's Current Opinion in Neurology, scientists wanted to examine lifestyle factors that can aid in stroke prevention.

Healthy lifestyle in a population with high cardiovascular risk and no history of stroke was shown to be associated with a 70% stroke risk reduction.

Dietary factors they found that contribute to lower stroke risk:
  • Potassium
  • Magnesium
  • Cysteine
  • Flavonoids
  • Lycopene
  • Folate/Folic acid
  • Fiber
  • Fish and Fish Oil
  • High Cocoa Chocolate
  • Fruit
  • Vegetables
  • Coffee (3-5 cups a day)
  • Tea
  • Mediterranean diet
Physical Activity
Physical inactivity increases total mortality and stroke occurrence by 25 to 30%. The benefit is observed regardless of type of exercise (leisure-time physical activity, occupational activity, or walking). Some studies showed substantial stroke risk reduction with more intensive exercise, leading to the most recent American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology recommendation for moderate-to-vigorous aerobic activity for at least 40 min at least 3-4 days a week for primary prevention.

Smoking
25% stroke risk increase for every 10 daily cigarettes. One year after smoking cessation, the risk is reduced by half and at 5 years, there seems no increased stroke risk compared with never smokers.

Passive smoking may result in doubling the stroke risk. No safe lower limit of exposure can be assumed, and a ban on smoking in public spaces therefore seems justified.

Alcohol Consumption
The lowest risk at about two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women. Higher consumption and binge drinking is clearly harmful.

Conclusion
The majority of stroke risk results from lifestyle factors and their modification can effectively reduce stroke burden.

Comprehensive, multimodal and individualized interventions by specifically trained medical personnel seem more effective in changing lifestyle.

More on this in our special Heart Health Update.
Genetics
Why Is This Graphic So Important?
Bonnie and Steve: If one or more of these boxes are yellow or red, then you have genetic deficiencies that may impair your ability to break down and move toxins from your body. You can prevent impairment with diet, lifestyle, and nutrient modification.

Far Infrared Sauna Therapy
It is always the right time to experience Far Infrared Sauna Therapy.

Aside from the fact that you are taking one hour out of your busy lives to relax, Far Infrared Therapy offers numerous therapeutic benefits, most importantly enhanced detoxification. Many clients use it to relieve painful joints, rev up metabolism, and remove buildup of heavy metals.

Sweat samples reveal traces of a number of toxins, including mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, and some hormone-disrupting chemicals. Far Infrared draws from deep within the dermal tissue.

A recent study in JAMA Internal Medicine found that increased frequency of sauna bathing reduced the risk of sudden cardiac death, coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, and all-cause mortality.

Twinlab Quercetin + C
Not Available Until at Least August
QuercetinPlusC
While this should not come as a surprise given the issues Twinlab has had keeping items in stock over the last 18 months, we have been notified by Twinlab that Quercetin + C in both sizes will not be available until August at the earliest. In addition, Twinlab Allergy C has been discontinued and will no longer be available.

To prevent these frequent occurrences, we are looking into the possibility of making our own Quercetin + C product, much like what we did with Alka Support. This process however, will take at least two to three months.

In the interim, we have individualized alternatives:

MOST ECONOMICAL OPTION:
Pure Encapsulations Ester-C & Flavanoids
-Contains quercetin and rutin, both wonderful antinflammatory flavanoids that also enhance the action of vitamin C. A bit less quercetin than what was in the Twinlab.
-One capsule for one capsule exchange
-If taking for allergies, you can add extra, separate Quercetin during the height of the season.
-If taking for severe inflammation, then you can add one or two more Quercetin capsules.
-Ester-C is well tolerated for mild to moderate corn intolerants.

IF SEVERELY CORN INTOLERANT:
Pure Encapsulations Quercetin AND Ecological Formulas Vitamin C-1000 (tapioca source)
One to two capsules Quercetin AND only one vitamin C is necessary.

FOR PURELY ALLERGY REASONS:
Metagenics Sinuplex
-Mirrors the old Twinlab Allergy Fighters the most.
-Cannot take if pineapple sensitive.
