NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
May 11, 2016
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that in this week's JAMA Pediatrics, researchers provide the first human evidence that maternal consumption of artificial sweeteners during pregnancy may increase infant Body Mass Index (BMI)? While this does not surprise us, it should be another sobering reminder that replacing sugar with chemicals is never a good thing.

Multis Prevent Heart Attacks: Study
Bonnie and Steve: A study on men's long-term multivitamin/mineral use, published online in last week'sThe Journal of Nutrition, did not disappoint.

According to Harvard researchers, multivitamin/mineral use by 18,530 male physicians for over 20 years was associated with a 44% lower risk of heart attack compared with those who took a placebo. There was no evidence of any safety concerns from long-term use.

The study also found that a daily multivitamin may reduce the risk of cancer by 8%.

Amazing, how have we not seen anything about this in the media? A 44% lower risk of heart attack would shake up the world if it was a medication.

Why is the study so scrumptious to us?
  1. It is a long-term study looking at prevention. This is how supplement studies should be structured.
  2. The study was performed with physician subjects. Maybe if physicians read that fellow physicians died less when they took a multivitamin/mineral long-term, maybe they would recommend them to their patients!

Methylation Is Critical for the Brain

Screening for Vitamin A & D Genetic Deficiencies Is Now Available!

Bonnie and Steve: If one or more of these boxes are yellow or red, then you have genetic deficiencies that may impair your ability to break down and move toxins from your body, as well as absorb vitamins A & D. The great thing is that you can prevent impairment with diet, lifestyle, and nutrient modification.

For example, if you cannot adequately convert Beta Carotene from food into absorbable vitamin A (retinol), this greatly increases your risk for the eye disease Macular Degeneration. Food and supplement modification addresses this issue.

The graphic on top is the methylation cycle. The bottom graphic is genes associated with vitamins A & D. If you have not done your 23andMe genetic test, yet, what are you waiting for?
