NCI Well Connect: May 16, 2016
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that according to a study in last week's JAMA Internal Medicine, "pharmaceutical industry payments to physicians are associated with higher rates of prescribing brand-name statins. As the United States seeks to reign in the costs of prescription drugs and make them less expensive for patients, our findings are concerning." This is still an issue years after a concerted effort was made to curb industry payments.

Docs Throw Tantrum Over New Aspirin Rules
Bonnie and Steve: United States Preventive Task Force (USPTSF) new draft recommendations for taking aspirin to prevent cardiovascular disease and colorectal cancer were recently released. You may be shocked by what they recommend.

Bottom Line: The only age group they recommend aspirin use for, with caveats, is adults ages 50 to 59 years. And the evidence only gets a B grade. "The USPSTF recommends low-dose aspirin use for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and colorectal cancer in adults ages 50 to 59 years who have a 10% or greater 10-year CVD risk, are not at increased risk for bleeding, have a life expectancy of at least 10 years, and are willing to take low-dose aspirin daily for at least 10 years."

Other Details:
  • Adults ages 60 to 69 years get a C grade, which means low evidence and insurance would not cover aspirin prophylaxis.
  • Adults younger than age 50 years not recommended due to insufficient evidence.
  • Adults age 70 years and older not recommended due to insufficient evidence.
One part they missed, which most in the medical world never addresses, is our inability to utilize aspirin due to genetic deficiency. Those of you who have a salicylate sensitivity understand this and the severe reactions one can get from taking aspirin.

In the April issue of Allergy, researchers listed the genes associated with aspirin intolerance:
  • Arachidonic acid pathway: ALOX5, LTC4S
  • FCER1A Pathway: FCER1A, MS4A2, FCER1G
We always recommend having your doctor test for these before even considering aspirin. And unless you are 50 to 59 with specific risk, you do not need it anyway!
Genetics
New Genetic Test for Vitamin A & D Absorption

Bonnie and Steve: If one or more of these boxes are yellow or red, then you have genetic deficiencies that may impair your ability to break down and move toxins from your body, as well as absorb vitamins A & D. The great thing is that you can prevent impairment with diet, lifestyle, and nutrient modification.

For example, if you cannot adequately convert Beta Carotene from food into absorbable vitamin A (retinol), this greatly increases your risk for the eye disease Macular Degeneration. Food and supplement modification addresses this issue.

The graphic on top is the methylation cycle. The bottom graphic is genes associated with vitamins A & D. If you have not done your 23andMe genetic test, yet, what are you waiting for?
