NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
May 16, 2018
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that a study in next month's Appetite solidifies the fact that unhealthy food cues are more tantalizing to children consuming all forms of media than healthy ones? Using eye-tracking to determine children's attention to cues embedded in a narrative cartoon movie, unhealthy food cues attract children's visual attention much more than healthy cues. We have a lot of work to do to curb the effect of unhealthy food marketing to children.

Have a happy, healthy day! Steve and Bonnie

Just a Spoonful of Fish Oil...
Bonnie and Steve: One gram of fish oil a day could help reduce the pain of patients with osteoarthritis, according to a new study in Rheumatology.

Could? It does, especially when taken long-term. However, it is wonderful to see it in a major medical journal.

In the largest, most up to date study of its kind, researchers examined the link between diet and the effective self-management of osteoarthritis. They found that a low-dose supplement of fish oil resulted in pain reduction for patients with osteoarthritis and helped improve their cardiovascular health.

And there's more!

Fish oil supplementation improves the diversity of the gut microbiome, independent of fiber and probiotics, new research in Scientific Reports has shown.

Women who had a higher intake of fish oil and a higher omega-3 index had a more diverse gut microbiome, which is associated with a number of health benefits, including lower risk of diabetes, obesity and inflammatory gut diseases like colitis or Crohn's.
