DID YOU KNOW that dietitians and nutritionists are not immune to industry influence? California Dietetic Association, the state affiliate of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics who registers dietitians, recently held their annual conference.
 
They had a Friday lunch that consisted of a bacon ranch salad, chocolate chip cookies, and pink yogurt parfait, all courtesy of gold sponsor McDonald's. One dinner was catered by Sizzler, Boston Market, and California Pizza Kitchen.
 
Shamefully, one panel on sweeteners in schools was sponsored by the Corn Refiners Association, whose members produce high fructose corn syrup.
 
The American College of Nutrition, in which Bonnie is a member of, does not have a sponsor for their annual conference, and they are very strict on sponsorships and industry influence.

Little-Known Weight Contributor Revealed.

Low blood potassium concentration or low dietary potassium intake can result in many metabolic disorders. However, a first-of-its-kind study to appear in the June issue of Clinical Nutrition found an association between potassium level and risk of metabolic syndrome, which is the combination of blood sugar disorders and obesity.

  

In 10,341 participants aged 40 years or older, those with the lowest blood levels of potassium had higher levels of triglycerides and uric acid, lower levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (the good cholesterol), larger waist circumference and more severe insulin resistance. 

  

Compared to subjects with the highest levels of potassium, the risk for metabolic syndrome doubled in the group with the lowest levels.

  

Don't run out and start taking potassium supplements please. Potassium can be dangerous if self-subscribed and must be overseen by a physician or knowledgeable health professional. Here are two quick tips to help raise your potassium if low.

  1. Lower your sodium intake in food. Potassium and sodium work together. An imbalance of one creates a deficiency in other. Medjool dates and coconut water are high in potassium. Even though we do not endorse eating potato chips, if you must, Trader Joes Olive Oil Potato Chips contain MUCH more potassium than sodium and taste great. 
  2. Take magnesium. Lower magnesium levels often mean you have low potassium levels as well.
