NCI Well Connect: May 23, 2016
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that PPIs, the much maligned class of reflux medication, took another huge body blow last week from a study in Circulation? If memory loss, kidney function, and nutrient malabsorption weren't enough, researchers found that PPIs accelerate aging by not allowing endothelial cells, which utilize acid, to function properly. What the medical world is finally discovering is that blocking acid long-term is not the answer. Neutralizing excess acidity though diet, lifestyle, and nutrient changes is the only way.

UP4 ACIDOPHILUS DISCONTINUED
Much to our chagrin, UAS Life Sciences has decided to discontinue UP4 Acidophilus (yellow label). Luckily, we have options for your individual needs. Please see details below.

Have a happy, healthy day. Steve and Bonnie

APA: Nutraceutials Effective Adjuncts to Antidepressants
Bonnie and Steve: In a stunning email alert sent to all of its members, the American Psychiatric Association led with the headline: "Nutraceuticals May Be Effective Adjuncts to Antidepressants".

Wait, wait, excuse me? You'll be ecstatic to see what compounds they suggest!

According to a study published this month in AJP in Advance, several commercially sold "nutraceutical" compounds, including S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), methylfolate (activated form of folic acid), omega-3, and vitamin D, may be effective adjuncts to antidepressants for reducing depressive symptoms.

Studies revealed a positive effect of the adjunctive intervention in 68% of the clinical trials reviewed for S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), methylfolate, omega-3, and vitamin D.

"All of the nutraceuticals reviewed in this article have mechanistic antidepressant activity underpinning their use," the authors wrote. For instance, omega-3 appears to exert "antidepressant activity potentially through modulation of norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin reuptake, degradation, synthesis, and receptor binding; through enhancement of glutathione antioxidant capacity; and through enhancement of cell membrane fluidity." The anti-inflammatory properties of the compounds also contribute to their antidepressant efficacy.

"Nutraceutical applications in psychiatry are advancing, as reflected in recent international collaborative consensus and position statements discussing the potential of nutraceutical use in psychiatry," the researchers stated. "Much more work is needed, and while an evolving body of research is strengthening the potential of nutraceuticals (and dietary considerations) as an important element in modern psychiatric practice, we are only beginning to study their potential applications."

Hooray! Thanks to one of our clients for passing the news along to us.
Genetics
New Genetic Test for Vitamin A & D Absorption

Bonnie and Steve: If one or more of these boxes are yellow or red, then you have genetic deficiencies that may impair your ability to break down and move toxins from your body, as well as absorb vitamins A & D. The great thing is that you can prevent impairment with diet, lifestyle, and nutrient modification.

For example, if you cannot adequately convert Beta Carotene from food into absorbable vitamin A (retinol), this greatly increases your risk for the eye disease Macular Degeneration. Food and supplement modification addresses this issue.

The graphic on top is the methylation cycle. The bottom graphic is genes associated with vitamins A & D. If you have not done your 23andMe genetic test, yet, what are you waiting for?

UP4 Acidophilus Discontinued

Bonnie and Steve: Much to our chagrin, UAS Life Sciences has discontinued UP4 Acidophilus (yellow label). Their reasoning was: "it's not a big seller" and "customers want multiple strains per capsule".

When we mentioned that in many instances, those who suffer from yeast imbalances need and can only tolerate acidophilus, they had no credible response. The cold reality is that even supplement manufacturers go with what sells, not what serves the best interest of its diverse customers.

Luckily, we have options to cater to your individual needs.
  1. If you no longer struggle with yeast imbalance, you can switch to UP4 Daily (lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus).
  2. For everyone else, we contract manufactured our own Acidophilus product: Well Probiotic L. Acidophilus. We will ship this product with refrigeration during the warmer months. but you can store it exactly as you did with UP4 Acidophilus (just refrigerate after opening).
We have never been about "what sells". Unfortunately, we are penalized for this as evidenced by the discontinuation of certain Twinlab products and now this.

We will continue to focus solely on what's best for your individual needs, as well as our own, because everyone here, in addition to our friends and families, all use the same products you do!
