NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
May 1, 2017
Dear Steve,

ANNOUNCEMENT
Over the last few months, there have been numerous instances where someone has said "we thought Bonnie retired" or "I thought Bonnie is retiring".

We have no idea how or why these rumors started, but we can tell you without question, while Bonnie is past retirement age, she has ABSOLUTELY NO designs on retiring anytime soon.

Please pass this along to anyone who may have thought Bonnie was retiring or retired.

DID YOU KNOW that adolescents aged 12 to 21 years are two to three times more sensitive than the general population to common environmental contaminants that can disrupt thyroid function, according to research in last month's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

The thyroid-blocking effects of exposure to perchlorate, thiocyanate, and nitrate, all inhibit the function of iodine utilization in thyroid cells.

Iodine is key to thyroid-hormone synthesis, and disruption is a leading cause of hypothyroidism. In adolescents, disruptions of normal thyroid function can profoundly affect every organ system.

All three contaminants are ubiquitous in the environment, so the best way to minimize exposure is to filter your water, eliminate exposure to cigarette smoke, and avoid nitrates in food.

Artificial Sweetener Alternatives

Bonnie and Steve:
Last week, you may have read our piece, Death Knell for Artificial Sweeteners, about the study in Stroke showing that diet soda greatly increased the risk of stroke, all-cause dementia, and Alzheimer's disease dementia.

What we did not share is a list non-caloric sweeteners we approve of. Here is, unfortunately, the very short list of what we feel are safe non-caloric sweeteners.

If you do not see your sweetener on this list, it did not make the grade. More importantly, check your labels. Many products combine numerous non-caloric sweeteners, some of which are on our list and others that are not.
  • Monk Fruit or Lo Han - usually not offered on its own, so be sure to look at ingredient labels for other sweeteners;
  • Stevia (organic and grown in Paraguay preferred) - we prefer a true stevia leaf extract as opposed to Rebaudioside A or C (Reb A, C);
  • Inulin (blue agave or chicory source okay) - while inulin has a minuscule amount of carbohydrate, we consider it non-caloric;
  • Xylitol (birch bark source only) - only consume in moderation as it can cause loose stool.
